Roadside America (or elsewhere)

Sharpies Golf House Surry Hills Sydney Australia.

Not technically roadside but trainside. Deep in downtown Sydney.

This was was one of the first things you saw when you pulled out of Sydney Central Railway Station on a journey to rural or interstate destinations. It was always a treat on a night train, animated golfer hits a neon hole-in-one every time. Sharpies has either moved or gone bust. Apparently the sign is now in storage with the Powerhouse Museum.

Ok, so I guess it's up to the new guy to bring neon of a different sort into this.

In Boston, there once was an area on the outskirt of what was called "Chinatown" that was called "The Combat Zone" . The 'Zone was a place where prostitution was pretty much legal and it was populated with all kinds of XXX movie theaters, live show clubs, skeevy motels rented by the 1/2 hour, and sex toy shops. It's rumored that a few illegal drugs may have been sold there too, , , , or so I heard . The idea was that instead of having prostitutes walking the streets in every part of the city they would keep it contained to that one area, and spare the rest of the city the shame of having Hos on every streetcorner. And it worked, everyone knew what that area of the city was for and you only went there for that. If you did it there, you didn't get busted and if you did it it elsewhere and got caught, you'd face the same legal charges as in any other city. As the Chinatown area became more prosperous strong demand arose for the dismantling of the Zone, Which I believe was finally entirely eliminated sometime in the late 1980s / early 1990s .

And you thought we Bostonians only had tea parties........ :rflmao:

The old days been there done that.

As of about a couple years ago, there are still a few...very few..."upstairs" clubs that may resemble the past, but one side of the street is all demolished, mostly I guess, parking for the theater district.

"LaGrange Street"
