Ok, stupid question time!
I recently acquired this receiver and it is nicotine filthy and obviously is going to be a cleaning project. How do you remove the knobs from the faceplate?

I don't know if they're press-fit or held on with setscrews, but you're right broonsbane... is she ever yellow! :D

a setscrew remover, otherwise known as an allen key. Could also use an excelite driver

D'oh again! Allen wrenches, excellent, i've got a bunch of them. I'm almost afraid to touch the damn knobs, the goo might act like Krazy glue. God, how the hell can you smoke that much? I smoked for 27 years, quit this past March. Never smoked in the house. Even as an ex-smoker I can't fathom the amount of smoking to make this amp as bad as it is.

BroonsBane - The RX-1203, like its big brother, the RX-1603, has a subtle Champagne Gold finish. It really depends upon the lighting. Under certain lights, my RX-1603 looks almost gold. So, be careful what you to do it. Some of the yellowing is there intentionally.

That's the good ole Nik-O-Glazing!! It took many years of careful application to create such a protective coating! Very labor intensive, and hazardous to ones health, to craft that fine champagne hue!! LOL!! I'm sure that thing will clean up well, and it'll be beautiful when you're done.

Enjoy,

Ron

I'm sure it will clean up nicely too. I don't plan on doing anything crazy. I'll start with a little Windex and see how that goes. The inside will be another matter altogether.

I will Bolly. I haven't popped the case off yet. I'm scared to look inside although the saving grace for this beauty is that the case isn't overly vented.

A Few Nudies

It isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be but there is a hell of alot of sticky nicotine residue everywhere. Going to be a while before this one shines again!

Screw the Windex. I think you're on the right track already: crank up the stove, heat that Rotel up to a nice boil, and let all that nicotine drip right off. :D

hey broonsbane, nice workbench... looks like mine! :D

It's convenient as hell. Where else can you have a workbench with the coffepot and the fridge 2 steps away?

Funny how a "little Windex" continues to "go a long way." I used it to clean the faceplates of equipment in my Lafayette retail stores that I worked in back in the 60's and 70's, and it did wonders.

I recently purchased a Dual 721 turntable on eBay which, while fully functional, was asolutely filthy when I received it. In its case, a lot of Windex went a long way! Be careful though: sometimes it removes the lettering on the front panel, and you'll never be able to replace that!
