RX-495 Issue

Hello Everyone,

I purchased my RX-495 back in 1997. It has been flawless until 2024 when it would suddenly "click" and turn off, either at low or high volume. It is sensitive to vibration. Something as little as putting my coffee cup on the desk can trigger it to turn off. Sometimes the relay clicks several times but doesn't turn off.

It doesn't always happen though. Cooler temps or warmer temps, it's sporadic.

So I suspect it is either cold solder connection(s), or the relay, or the power switch.

Slapping the top left side of the receiver brings it back to life.... but not always. It depends on how hard I slap it, or sometimes if I lift the left side of the receiver it will come back to life too.

So today I took off the cover and had a good look inside. Nothing stands out as problematic. No leaking caps. I was going to take it apart and look at the solder connections and traces, but I just don't have the patience to deal with all that right now.

So, my question is: Have you ever experienced this exact issue with your RX-495 or similar in the Natural Sound series of Yamaha amps/receivers? What was your solution?

Hello, it looks like bad solder joints. I would look at the circuit board with a magnifying glass and solder most of the joints.

Yes. My issues/experience was resolved by reseating the white ribbon cables.

They came loose a little, but didn't appear loose or a problem. Maybe just dusty? But re-seating fixed all of mine. There's a few in there. The usual suspect on mine was the ribbon behind the input selector. They're not clamped, just pull right out and push in. Mine weren't clamped anyway, I should say.

Look at the relay driver transistor. They run hot normally and frequently compromise the solder connections.
