OK. And the balance control is a permanent setting to maintain balance at all volume settings? You will need a short lead with clips on each end, and the Sams schematic to get started.

OK. You will be operating the unit with it turned upside down, so make sure the unit is secure with no tubes touching anything. Take all the safety precautions that are both common sense, and regularly addressed here on AK. You will be working mostly near the front of the unit, so position it for that advantage. Turn the tone controls to their flat setting, mode switch to stereo, and center the balance control. Connect a known balanced high level input into the AUX 2 inputs and select that input on the selector switch. Play the unit at a normal listening volume, with the speakers positioned so that you can hear the relative balance of the channels between them. Proceed in this order with your clip lead:

1. Clip pin #7 of V3 and pin #7 of V8 together. Does the sound balance? If yes, the problem is before this point. If not, then the problem is in the power amplifier section proper. If the sound balanced, remove the clip lead and:

2. Clip the center terminals of the two sections of the volume control together. If the sound balanced, the problem is before this point. Remove the clip lead and:

3. Now clip the "hot" terminals of the two sections of the volume control together (where C22 and C45 connect to). If the sound is balanced, the problem is still before this point. Remove the clip lead and:

4. Clip pin #1 of V2 and pin #1 of V7 together. If the sound balanced, the problem is still before this point. Remove the clip lead and:

5. Now clip pin #2 of V2 and pin #2 of V7 together. You know the drill. If you need to go further:

6. Now clip pin #6 of V2 and pin #6 of V7 together. If you need to go further,

7. Now clip pin #7 of V2 and ping #7 of V7 together. Still further?

8. Connect the selector switch side of C14 and C37 together.

Some point in this process will be the first point in the signal path where the sound will balance. The circuity immediately before that point is where the problem lies. There can be multiple problems causing imbalance issues. If correcting the problem at the first identified point does not return a fullly balanced presentation, then after correcting the problem at that point, keep moving backwards in the unit using these steps until the issues is resolved.

Dave,

I'm working on your trouble shooting steps now. I have very low output when using aux 2 with my ipad. There is no problem when using aux 1. I tried that one but can't get any balance switching at all when trying the first step. I'm hoping that aux 1 just wont work with your steps as you indicated aux 2. While I'm waiting to hear back I'm going to install the new caps I purchased for better bass. I'm supposed to deliver this tomorrow!! Nothing like waiting to the last minute.

fwiw ohms at the speaker terminals:

Channel A 1.2 ohms
Channel B .9 ohms

I'm changing the x over caps and the originals look like they are ceramic. I purchased polypropylene orange drops. Should I have used dayton audio film foil caps instead?
 
Aux 1 and Aux 2 inputs are identical and go the to same point in the circuit through the selector switch, except that Aux 1 has individual L & R level controls between the input jacks and the selector switch. Therefore, if there is a problem with Aux 2, it must either be at the Aux 2 input jacks, the Selector switch, or the wiring in between.

Therefore, if there is a problem with Aux 2, it must either be at the Aux 2 input jacks, the Selector switch, or the wiring in between.

OK then I have to fix the aux 2 input in order to do the test. If I cant figure it out in time is there any harm in running the unit with the balance not centered?
 
Dave, I replaced the caps and checked the aux2 wires to the switch, all was good. When I hooked it back up I wiggled the selector and heard the aux2 output get louder. It turns out aux2 is actually on the tape selector. The executive iv operating manual doesn't tell you that.

So when I Clipped pin #7 of V3 and pin #7 of V8 together that disabled the balance control and it appeared I had balance. Is the balance control supposed to be disabled during these tests? If so I will go to step two.

Update: Balance has returned. All I did was replace C49, 51,52,53 for better bass and one of the 1.5K resistors I crushed in the process. I also re cleaned the selector switch. If I hadn't had a friend check the balance and come up with the same setting I did I may have thought I had too much wine that night! My friend owns a recording studio so I trust his ears!!! Anyway it sounds very good. Oh I also had one mullard output tube that tested much lower than the rest so now I'm running two mullards and two GE 6BQ5's. Would have liked to have all mullards but didn't want to give my last two up!! The console is going to Siduri Wineries tasting room in Healdsburg CA. Please stop by and take a look if your ever in town. I will post photos. Thanks for hanging in there with me. You guys are the best!!!

Glad you got it all squared away! So Aux 2 (as it appears on the X-101ST) is labeled as a Tape input on the X-1000 console unit?

Yes Tape Playback is for what's connected to aux 2 input. Then there is a Tape Head selection which is for the tape input.
 
Humm. So a small detail change between the two units -- likely in labeling only, as I would bet that the actual build between the units is otherwise identical regarding the Aux 1, and the Aux 2/Tape Playback inputs.
