SA-CD Player VS.BluRay Player

kcblair

Back to records
Hello Audio Fans, I'm looking into purchasing some SA-CD's. Question, dedicated SA-CD players are out of my budget. Will a SA-CD compatible Blu Ray player work satisfactory ? I'm looking at a Sony BDP-S5100 that does play SA-CD's. Thank you for your input.

Will your receiver process DSD through HDMI?

If so, you should be good. If not, you may need something with 5-7.1 analog outputs and inputs on your receiver.

Keep us posted and congratulations on moving into the SACD world. :thmbsp:

You can only output SACD to HDMI on that player - so you would need a Receiver that can decode DSD (read EXPENSIVE!!!). If you want SACD, why not look at used players? I have 2 Pioneer Elite DV-79AVi that can be had on THAT site for around 100-200 USD and they were TOTL at the time they were made.

Great minds! :thmbsp:

Nope, I have a vintage receiver, Stereo RCA inputs.

I believe it will play SACD through the stereo RCA jacks using the on board SACD decoder. You will have to select stereo mode rather than Multi-Channel mode from the SACD's set up Menu. Once selected, it might read SACD in small letters on the Players display screen. You may need it connected to the TV to select the proper setting like I do.

The SACD set-up button on my Denon Player switches between CD, Stereo SACD, and Multi-Channel SACD. My Player has 5.1 Analog outputs that play's SACD multi-channel disc's with an AVR with 5.1 Analog inputs, or through the HDMI connector.

Just bit the bullet (I'm a cheapskate) and purchased an OPPO BDP-103 for my home theater, $499 (defrayed some of the cost with Amazon gift cards I got for Xmas). It has analog out for SACD and DVD-Audio.

If I correctly understand how this works, due to copyright restrictions, SACD and DVD-Audio cannot be sent over S/PDIF coax or optical (TOSLINK), only HDMI (it's somewhat ironic that the "S" in S/PDIF is for "Sony" and Sony owns the technology for SACD). So, if your preamp/receiver doesn't have HDMI in, having the analog out function on your player is your only option for getting a true SACD (and DVD-Audio) signal to your preamp/receiver. You can still get digital sound through a S/PDIF connection, but it will be converted to PCM (CD quality data) before it leaves the player.

If $499 is steep, there are usually a good number of used OPPO players on eBay, US Audio Mart, etc. Just make sure it has SACD and analog out. Check the manuals on OPPO's website. (Note: there's a used 970HD on US Audio Mart that' very reasonably priced that might do the trick.)

Gurus, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Great, that's even better info. I have a HTS, but want the SA-CD to go into my analog receiver. I'll check US Audio MArt.

I have an older DV-981HD Oppo (non-Bluray) on my 2 chan system, and an Oppo BDP-93 (Bluray)
on my multichannel system downstairs. Both of them will play SACD or DVD-A discs just fine -
preferred output is multichannel RCA cables. I do have the DV-981HD set to force 2 channel mode.

Does the DV-981HD Oppo need to be connected to the TV to play the SACD ?
I mean, will the LCD display show the track info ?

Yes - I DID have to hook it up to a TV to do the initial setup,
but that was over a year ago. Works fine.

And frankly, anyone that gets fussy because someone typed SACD as SA-CD needs to get a clue and find other things to worry about in life.

Go to SONY's own website here

http://store.sony.com/es-super-audi...S/cat-27-catid-All-ES-Home-Theater-Components

In the right hand column under Highlights ...

Single SA-CD/CD tray
Multi-channel SA-CD playback

Sony's own official website seems to use them interchangably -
Super Audio CD = SA-CD = SACD ... so - its NOT that important -
no one is confusing SA-CD with regular old CDs ...

Another good player I can recommend is the Yamaha BD-A1020. Its a universal player that'll play just about anything you throw in it. If you want to start collecting SACDs before you have a SACD player you can get hybrid discs that will play on regular CD players as well. Perhaps you are familiar with it but sa-cd.net has a decent catalogue of discs with a FAQ section explaining everything about SACD. Most of the links on where to buy are Amazon links.

Thank you all, I have found several SACD player on fleabay, I'm checking out. No problem with hooking up to TV for setup, I just don't want to mess with that just for playing CD's. Thanks, I did discover SACD.net in my research. I did come across this statement in Wikipedia and will do more research, before sinking $$ into this, "While the SACD format can offer more channels (e.g. surround sound), and a longer playing time than CD, research published in 2007 found no significant difference in audio quality between SACD and standard CD"
Anybody care to comment on this :scratch2:

For SACD playback on a budget, look for pre-owned better-end DVD players traded out for Blu-Ray. They can be absolute bargains for the level of playback SQ and no on-line programming updates necessary.

Simply put a SACD disk has the capability to store more information, some of that through dual layer recording. If the album being recorded can fit onto a single layer the second layer can be dedicated to the CD format version. There's a better explanation in the FAQ section of the sa-cd.net site.

Bit for bit if both the CD layer and SACD layer were identical you'd hear no difference.

The OPPO BDP-103 was mentioned earlier. I don't think that spending $499 on this device qualifies one as being a "cheapskate" but perhaps compared to the TOL BDP-105, it does.

Regardless, the 103 is a truly superb and versatile player. The ability to output hi-res material to RCA outputs is fantastic. That feature has allowed me to hang onto my much loved Yamaha 5.1 receiver, lacking digital inputs as it does. I simply feed the 5.1 analog output from the OPPO to the corresponding inputs on the Yamaha and presto - top notch SACD, DVD-Audio and movie surround sound playback!

You can even mix 5.1 and 7.1 material down to stereo on the OPPO.

Also, the OPPO can connect to your network or external storage and play back digital audio and video for you. This includes SACD (DSD) files stored on hard drives and hi-res material purchased online.

All of this versatility is made even better by the fact that the BDP-103 sounds fantastic. The DAC and analog stage are very well implemented on this device.

Lastly, the video output is reference quality. Did I mention that it has HDMI inputs so that you can connect your cable/satellite box to it to get razor sharp video from that source too?

As you can tell, I am pretty impressed with the BDP-103! :D

I use a Pioneer DV-563A DVD player, which supports multichannel RCA output for SA-CD and DVD-A. Still works great and can be found very inexpensively on the auction site! It's old now, but still functions perfectly. Not an OPPO, but it works! When it dies, then I'll get an OPPO...!
