SA-CD Player VS.BluRay Player

My Marantz SACD player DV7600 has HDMI output (among others), my Pioneer AVR has HDMI input and offers "DSD to PCM Converter : Multi-Channel". Will that give me true SACD sound? I'm thoroughly confused by all this!

While some players can transfer a straight DSD signal, they're usually higher-end models, that I probably couldn't afford. But, I do the same as you, DSD to PCM, then HDMI into my Pioneer AVR. While, I guess it's not as pristine a signal, as a player that can output true DSD SA-CD, it still sounds good, and it is high resolution SA-CD content. So, regardless, I'm happy!

There are many relatively inexpensive players that can do a direct DSD to analogue conversion (without going through a PCM conversion before conversion to analogue). The Pioneer 563 mentioned earlier in this thread can do a direct DSD to analogue conversion (but only in 2 channel stereo). The Oppo 103/105 can also do direct DSD to analog conversions for all channels. Others include Onkyo's 506 DVD-based uni player and Sony's own non Blu-ray based SACD players, like the 5 disc SCD-595 CD/SACD changer.

As for whether the added conversion from DSD to PCM (and finally to analogue) can be heard, that's dependent on the listener. I really don't think it can be detected (at least by my ears) but that's just my opinion. However, with the rise of DSD downloads, hardware manufacturers are introducing products that can directly accept a DSD bitstream. Heck, only in 2013 did Sony allow its non-ES series HT receivers to decode DSD thru their HDMI inputs.

True. But, you said it yourself; "direct DSD to analog". Not hard to find players that can do that. 'I guess' the discussion was also (no so obviously) wondering about equipment that can output DSD via HDMI, connected to a processor/AVR that can receive a HDMI DSD signal... :scratch2:

I agree 100%. I'd as least have to hook up my Meyer Sound HD-1 studio monitors, to even consider hearing any differences in direct DSD, as opposed to a DSD to PCM signal. Even then, I doubt I'd hear a difference. My ears are getting too old for that type of comparison. :sigh:

I did the unthinkable, I read the Marantz DV7600 manual! It doesn't do SACD through HDMI, I have to use the analog outputs, which support 5.1. Will I then get the full SACD experience? (I don't have any SACD disks yet!)

I believe that my Yamaha DVD S1800 does direct to analog from DSD conversions to the analog outputs. It also offers a DSD signal on the HDMI output. It converts to PCM when using the coax or optical outputs.

Thanks to another AK'r I was alerted when Amazon was blowing the S1800 out for $80 a couple of years ago.

From the Audioholics review:
The DVD-S1800 has four two-channel Burr Brown 192kHz/24-bit DACs for the stereo and 5.1-channel output sections to provide absolute sonic transparency.

I think you have to have at least one SACD to get any part of the SACD experience.:D

To answer your question. The analog output is high-res. It's just that the conversion from DSD to analog is done in the player instead of a receiver or external DAC.

That's why I've hung onto my 1st Gen PS3. It can output SA-CD through HDMI. I think it 'may' do a PCM conversion, but I don't care about that too much. It still sounds great!

That was a really good player. I used to sell a lot of the Yamaha DVD S1800's. I had it connected to a mid level Yamaha AVR, running into 5 B&W M1's, with a 10" B&W sub. I'd throw on my Pink Floyd: DSOTM SA-CD, and sell the whole set-up in droves. :D

Funny thing was, until I came along, my boss at the store, wasn't even demoing equipment with SA-CD discs. No audio in surround at all. Just movie systems. Heck, they weren't even using HDMI yet. They still had component video running throughout the store!

In addition to being pretty good with SACD's, IMO it's (DVD S1800) also pretty good as a DVD player.

I found the codes on the internet to make it region free. Being able to play a DVD from anywhere using HDMI (automatically up-converted to 1080P) is a definite plus.

DSOTM:
I took a lot of heat when I posted about being underwhelmed with DSOTM. I've tried but I don't get it. Yes, I have the multichannel SACD version and the original LP. I'm still completely underwhelmed.

Here's a 'thought'; I'll hit that "button" before you do!!!! :D That player looks in very nice shape! Comes with everything too (that is, if I'm looking at the same auction that you are)? :thmbsp:

Otherwise, go for it! You can't try a SA-CD without a player!

Now, I just wish that I had bought Roxy Music's "Avalon", while it was still available on SA-CD! Used copies sell for a fortune!!!

I'm looking at the same DV-45A, any thoughts before I hit that "button", Thank you

Yea, that was an interesting thread. But, I like DSOTM. Then again, I like YES's Tales From Topographic Oceans too. All four sides! Weird, I know!

I like Dire Straits, but give me 'Love Over Gold'. Telegraph Road is an epic song! :music:

It's on SACD....but just in stereo (no surround sound)

Got it, now I need to order some SACD. Original box and everything, free shipping (probable included in price). Guess I'm a verified member of the SACD club ???

SACD-DVD-audio players

I've been researching relatively inexpensive ways to get into these formats and have been drawn to the Oppo dv-980h and dv-981hd. Also the Denon dvd-2910 and dvd-2930. The Oppo bdp-83 would be my first choice but they are still too expensive.

I took a look at the manual, and I believe the answer is yes. If your HTR does not have HDMI in, follow the instructions for connection option 2 on page 12. See also pages 41 and 42.
