SA-CD Player VS.BluRay Player

In addition to being pretty good with SACD's, IMO it's (DVD S1800) also pretty good as a DVD player.

I found the codes on the internet to make it region free. Being able to play a DVD from anywhere using HDMI (automatically up-converted to 1080P) is a definite plus.

DSOTM:
I took a lot of heat when I posted about being underwhelmed with DSOTM. I've tried but I don't get it. Yes, I have the multichannel SACD version and the original LP. I'm still completely underwhelmed.

Joe, it was, what, 1972. There was nothing else remotely like it and Alan Parsons literally went to school on it to create the best sounding concept album that the technology of the time could produce. Other than that, it is a concept album, and as such a complete unified work of sonic art that you may or may not 'get' and that may or may not appeal to everyone.

The DV-45A will not read the discs for some of the newer sacd material. Probably needs a firmware update that will never come. Its ok for dvd-a , but I prefer the sound of my jvc dvd-a players. I got the pioneer for $7.99 at the local savers store, and a jvc xa-sa75 for the same price.

This is but one of the problems with digital format standards "creep" and formats that require a high-speed unlimited data stream connection which a certain percentage of users like me will never have.

Now, I just wish that I had bought Roxy Music's "Avalon", while it was still available on SA-CD! Used copies sell for a fortune!!!

Yeah, SACDs were reasonably priced at one time. Had I known that they'd get crazy expensive, I would have stocked up. I was able to get some good ones like Avalon, but that was more by accident than anything else.

Yet, some SACDs still sell for cheap (some Dylans, John Legend, DSOM), not sure why.

What would you consider critical listening. I recently got into Jazz (vinyl) and would like to try some in SACD format. Also, will the SQ of the SACD player (standard CD) be better than the Technic SL-PD827 (1992 vintage) that I currently use ?

I enjoy listening 'in-depth' to really good well recorded and engineered vinyl, I find my best analogue player set-up allows me to hear "deeper" into a recording for more details of the parts of the arrangements and sound texture signatures of the individual instruments, which increases my enjoyment of the music and the experience. While this Pioneer player is incredibly clean sounding and very well sonically balanced it doesn't let me hear 'into' the music to anything like at that depth. When I relax and just enjoy it for what it can do it is a suprizingly pleasant player where-as I find most "affordable" CD players decidedly not so. Therefore I do recommend it, especially when it comes with the ergonomically excellent standard remote, and it does not require a video display to operate self-standing as an audio-only player.
Otherwise I cannot say on this player vs the Pana, you will have to check that when possible.

I was underwhelmed when it first came out. I bought the LP then and still have it. It's in excellent condition having had minimal playing. I'm 66 now, so I was right there in the middle of all the musical experimenting that was going on back then. Not only that, I had fairly decent gear for that time. Dyna PAS-3X, Stereo 70, AR-4X, Miracord TT/Pickering cartridge.

Hey, I've never been one to follow trends or the crowd. I've never much liked Hendrix either.

Fair 'nuff, non-fans of DSOTM tend to be scarce on the ground.

Not in my neck of the woods (the inner city). Many minorities and lots of black people in particular have never even heard of Pink Floyd.

I didn't 'get' a lot of the the 70s black urban fare until I realized they had a pretty good party going on and I missed it, some of the production values were astonishingly good as well. What I let go or never got was metal after AC-DC and Led Zep, when it split into the dark and harsh hyphenated sub-genres, and Brit punk in general which I perceived as whiney and self-indulgent, lacking in anything even remotely musically or lyrically interesting. Nowadays I find about 2 cuts in succession of anything AC-DC will hold me for a good long while and more is just way too much, and I'm nowhere as much into Zappa and the Mothers or Kansas as I once was. OTOH, The Who seems to hold up on some selected albums and new discoveries from the past still await, I'm willing to learn from those patient enuff to explain what makes it good and interesting.

Well, I prefer the Alan Parsons (unofficial) DVD-A surround release of DSOTM to the SACD surround release that he did not do the remix on ...
But other than demoing my surround system with it, due to overplay on the local radio station, DSOTM has been run into the ground for me.

I'll play SACD Avalon, I bought that on a whim at Best Buy a few years back, big fan of Bryan Ferry and didn't have an SACD player when I got it(!).

I think our tastes are more alike than not, PF and Hendrix excepted.

I sort of straddle two areas. My family background is inner city but I grew up as a military brat. So I like Led Zeppelin and Blue Magic. Incidentally, I've always loved Tommy.

Isn't that SACD of Avalon a hybrid?

Yes, but it has a surround ONLY bonus track of Always Unknowing that doesn't exist when played on a non-SACD player. Got some other good tracks as well.

I'm career Army retired, my family is Salt Lake Valley Mormon pioneer stock both sides so that's different. I was the black sheep in many respects. Some folks say Zep has been played to death and that's probably true if you left the radio on all the time, I still enjoy them and other stuff from the 70s that may have been over-exposed..
Wish I had Avalon, the title tune is the best thing I think I've heard Brian do. Reminder to self: Dig out "Stranded" and clean it up and play it.

Its nice to see some love for Roxy Music and Avalon. I'll admit, at the time, I didn't really know who Roxy Music was? I bought the album for the cover art! I'm an amatuer artist, so I usually always bought books (mainly Frank Frazetta covers) and albums (Roger Dean) for the art. BTW, Roger Dean should have been paid royalties from Avatar! What a rip off! :nono:

Now, I can agree on Led Zeppelin! But, not Tommy - as in The Who! Tommy is my DSOTM. I can't stand it! Overblown and pretentious. Overplayed for me too. Very burnt out on it. I like other Who releases, and Pete Townsend's solo work. Just not Tommy...!

Finally, who's Blue Magic???

I am not a fan - I find DSOTM - overblown tripe, to me there are WAY better LP's out there from that time. I heard it so many times in college, I want to run away screaming every time I hear it now.

I've heard it a zillion times and still love it.

SW:
Now I know what your personal Kryptonite is!:D

Who's Blue Magic?

They were a Philadelphia soul/R&B vocal group. They were quite popular on the R&B charts back then. Their biggest hit was a song titled "Sideshow".:smoke:

If you like Led Zeppelin, but are burnt out on them, try this:

Its Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation, Live at Sound Stage 2005. Some Lep stuff, and some solo Plant material, all with new arrangements. Awesome!

Update

Today FedEx delivered my Pioneer DV-45A. Original box with remote , OI. and an assortment of nicely shielded cables. The player was connected via the RCA 2Ch. inputs on the stereo receiver.

First impressions. Standard CD's sounded better, as I was able to do an A/B comparison with both players connected to the receiver. Then I went to my local Newbury Comics, as they had a few Jazz SA-CD's in stock. Now I am really impressed. It still sounded pristine like a CD, but the sound stage is greatly improved. I mean, really detailed. Sort of vinyl like, but not that warm record sound. My standard Test CD is Dave Matthews Band: Crash (from the http://www.soundstage.com/referencediscs/referencediscs.htm). That CD really sounded great. I wish I could find that CD in SA-CD format.

Now I might start adding some more Jazz SA-CD's to my collection.

NOW, for an interesting surprise. I was connecting the player to my HTS , so that I could access the settings, before using the unit as a stand alone and I noticed an optical audio input labeled "SA-CD only" Well blow my skirt up.:D Only problem, I don't prefer to listen to music through the HTS. But I might play around, to see what the SA-CD surround sounds like some day.

So overall, my standard CD's sound better and the SA-CD is really nice.:thmbsp:

ADDED: I have applied the "Super Bass" function and now the SA-CD has taken on a warmist quality.
