sad, but probably typical

Rise and fall indeed. Maybe if he'd (c'mon, that's a dude) gotten into vintage somewhere along the line things would have turned out differently.

What a shame, those high end 90's Pioneer components looked nice and probably were good quality..and he just dumped them?:sigh: Yep sad but true indeed....

Lol, Creative, and Apple no less! And lossy mp3! At least get some decent DAP and lossless (and good IEM's)!

Even the sound card, which is ok, is still just a sound card and not external DAC. And sounds like he's got some computer self powered speakers/sub (which don't deserve the name).

Poor sap.

I get the space/convenience issue to a point. What truly baffles me is the "I can't crank it anyway so why bother." thing.

I think I had that amp .... for a few days I could not sell it fast enough. Lucky for me some guy from the far east was looking for this stuff.
A really bad component you make yourself live with can have these results...

Yea, I mean although I can crank my monitor/sub setup all I want (although if it is REALLY LOUD I can hear it just a bit outside of my house on the one side so I never crank it late at night even though I doubt my neighbor could hear it inside his house anyway) most of the time I don't. I listen to it at a low-mid or mid volume and love it. The SQ is not diminished just because it is at a lower volume and the sub isn't shaking my pants like it can...wtf? Sometimes I just listen to my monitors all by themselves too, just to get a more clear/precise sound in the highs and mids. That guy is nuts lol.

Tend to agree, except about the speakers. I also find most speakers really depressing to have around.

That's what I really like about B&O speakers: they tried to break the mold and came up with original attractive designs, especially the wall mounted ones, which tend to blend into the background.

Not sure I know what you mean by speakers being depressing, I like how almost all speakers look (although I prefer smaller monitor sized ones both aesthetically and sonically) but I do understand that the dog coffin sized ones can be clunky looking or obtrusive. Still I like the vintage style of those types.

B&O speakers are certainly unique looking, I have no experience with them though.

I happen to really like how the Usher X718 looks:

But I just can't justify spending over $1000 on speakers. :yikes: If they were more like $600 I'd probably "upgrade" from my S-520's. That'd be twice the cost of what I got the 520's for, and I'm sure they're not even twice as good, much less over 3 times as good.

Thread derail over lol.

For me they almost invariably detract from the ambience of a room rather than enhance it - except for B&O. With B&O speakers, there is often a "wow" factor about them, or they are unobtrusive. Others, as you say, are coffin shaped and about as inspirational as coffins too.

I've heard both with the same electronics.

Twice as good? Three times as good?

Ok. Thread derail really over. :D

I got ya, I guess I'm just not that into decor. :dunno:

I will agree that most box shaped speakers don't sound very good...at all...(hence why I don't have any even though I think they look cool) but it is heresy to say that on this forum and I don't mean to offend. Towers are different though, but I still prefer monitors.

That seems to be what I've heard as well, but I still kind of doubt it...but I've never heard both!

I'm very satisfied with the 520's and have been for years, so upgradeitus hasn't hit with speakers yet (with headphones and headphone amps it's been a different story!). Maybe if I could get the X718 used for around $700 I'd go for it, but I still think that's ridiculous personally.

We're the only ones posting itt so can it really be derailed? :scratch2: :D

The 520s just didn't float my boat. A lot of the monitors I listened to didn't. Different strokes.

Getting back to the original topic... Not to play armchair psychiatrist too much, but I have to wonder if the dude just no longer listens to music the way he used to and big speakers, etc... were a constant reminder of that. Kind of like having a nice bike in the garage you never ride.

Why people take good gear to the dump instead of even asking around if anyone wants it is wasteful on multiple levels. I like to think rescuing vintage stereo is a "green" hobby, we're keeping electronics out of landfills and fixing them so they bring music into the lives of ourselves and others. Hopefully someone at the dump snagged that gear after he dumped it.

Poor sap.

He's not a sap; he's a fella who has a different take on the gear needed to enjoy music than you. Evidently he's enjoying music as much as ever, that hardly makes him a sap. Indeed, I'd say the fella is very astute; he has what he needs, no more and no less.

I think just junking things you no longer want rather than selling them is liberating. Just cut it loose, gone, out of my life. Feels good.

I'm fixin' to get ready to mail you a bunch of grainy-sounding 70s receivers I've collected in my closet. PM me your address. Sweet freedom, baby.
