sad, but probably typical

The guy is a sap.

He's not a sap; he's a fella who has a different take on the gear needed to enjoy music than you. Evidently he's enjoying music as much as ever, that hardly makes him a sap. Indeed, I'd say the fella is very astute; he has what he needs, no more and no less.

Vintage gear sounds better, has lasted 20, 30, even 40 or more years and with a tune up will last that long again. His I pod will bee a non working peice of crap inside 5 years. So IMO if a guy wants to spend upwards of a hundred dollars every few years just to have convenient mediocre sound; he is a sap.:D

For what they cost new in the UK (about $1300), on ebay you could get far far better - even good B&O towers.

Better according to who? :D

Don't worry, I'm quite satisfied with my 520's, otherwise I would "upgrade" and I'd certainly shop a lot before I did, but as I love the 520's, an even better pair of those (the X718's) would be high on my list. I doubt I'd ever get towers too, they just aren't my thing.

But thanks!

Thread derail continues! :scratch2:

Lol, nice!

The 520s just didn't float my boat. A lot of the monitors I listened to didn't. Different strokes.

I understand, and no worries...I couldn't care less if anyone else liked any of my gear, I do! :D I think their neutral or precise/analytical/transparent/revealing/"bright" presentation can put some off, but me, I like that sound signature! (Hence my love of the AKG 702's as well).

But of course they are not "the best" budget monitor, for none are. And I looked at probably about 20 worthwhile competitors before I settled on the 520's. Any of them would be good/great monitors as well for sure.

Thread derailed again! :D

Vintage gear sounds better,

That is a matter of opinion. Most of the 70 Japanese stuff touted here sounded mediocre when it was new much less now. That's also an opinion. In any event what's important to the fella who wrote the article is what sounds good to him; it's obviously a ridiculous endeavor to tell someone who's enjoying something that it's not good. Obvious to me anyway.

His I pod will bee a non working peice of crap inside 5 years.

That's an unproven assertion. In any even they're cheap enough that periodically replacing them is no big deal and probably cheaper than buying and maintaining a bunch of hashy sounding old gear. And good sounding old gear is often (usually) expensive.

I'm fixin' to get ready to mail you a bunch of grainy-sounding 70s receivers I've collected in my closet. PM me your address. Sweet freedom, baby.

Thank you. I'll throw them in Lake Michigan and they can be a carp habitat; probably the best use they'll have been put to since new. ;)

Calm down, I was half joking.

What I meant was that if he wanted to go the route he did there are better options. Better DAP's, better headphones, and better DAC's. And all for less. So he is a sap in the fact that he fell for marketing hype and bought not well received gear instead of better received gear for less.

Also, he thinks lossy mp3's sound great...well...maybe with his low-fi gear he can't tell the difference between lossy and lossless (not that he probably ever compared the two)...but he's obviously not exactly an expert on what sounds good (no, neither am I, but I mean come on lol).

Also, why attack me? The OP, in effect, called him sad. If you have problem with me, PM me about it, don't take it out in a thread. :dunno:

Ipod's, imo, are mediocre at best brand new. And not at all worth the cost...maybe half the cost. And even then there are better sounding options with better features too at the same price.

But I don't think that any DAP is just going to not work in a few years, even an iPod. I know several that have old DAP's that are still going, and I have one that is 4 or 5 years old and works fine. And, for portable use at least, they can sound really good, much better than my old portable cd players I used to use (which still work) and much more convenient (hundreds of songs to access).

You'll note I edited the post before you responded and almost immediately upon original posting; it was a little out of line.

I think just junking things you no longer want rather than selling them is liberating. Just cut it loose, gone, out of my life. Feels good.

I agree, the next time I want to get rid of a pet, instead of finding out if someone would like a nice companion, I'm just going to club it over the head with a shovel and dump it along side of the road. Just cut it loose, gone, out of my life. Feels good.

Okay, maybe a bit too far, but the problem here was not so much with the fact that he is enjoying his music in a different manner, but the fact that he was so wasteful with something that could bring someone else quite a bit of joy. Over the years I have built up a network through Freecycle and Craigslist of people who are willing to take gear off my hands for no cost at all. Yeah I didn't want the stuff, but beside the liberating feeling of being free from things you no longer need, you also get a good feeling when you have found someone that could get quite a bit of joy out of something you no longer use for no cost at all.

Remember, not all that appreciate fine gear can spend the big bucks for it. It is the socially responsible thing to do to think what you can do for others in need.

I wonder if you have ever used this one on your wife. Probably not since you are still alive.

No, sorry to say she died, not me. At the age of 36 after five years with brain cancer. Then I raised our four kids on my own.

Anything else you want to know?

The electronics in ipods recently have gotten near microscopic since the days of portable CD players and in my opinion are by design, destined to a very short life. They keep packing more and more features into them, and admittedly improved performance, but this comes at a price; decreased life span. I had one die after a short life. A friend of mine has had two die. My neice has had 3 or 4 die in a short span of years. If companies made stuff to last, it would cripple their sales, at least to some degree. Anyway, I'm gonna go listen to my ipod...err I mean my G 7000 receiver, my Onkyo Integra CD player and my dog coffin stacked KLH Model 23's; poor sap that I am.

You always have really insightful and clarifying posts. I've been paying attention to the people more than the topics lately on AK, it's interesting to see people's personalities expressed through raw text. A few people tend to take things maybe a little off track, which is good about 50% of the time and not so good for the the other half, then there are another group of people who put it back on topic, and yet more members who do both or neither at different points. Very self regulating. With that said, I agree: if the guy's happy, HE'S happy.

Sorry for the derail/ramble :D

A lot of the older gear isn't worth nearly what the general consenses around here says it is, and its not that easy to find people who want some old big stereo. (That looked like a nice amp, though...).

Being as we're a bunch of cheapskates, the general consensus around here seems to be a lower price than a lot of stuff brings on eBay...

Guess he wasn't a real Hi-Fi guy. That's ok, most people aren't now-a-days. Too bad for them. I love my vintage! Yeah...those big box speakers sure are ugly and take up too much space! haha. And they just sound toooo gooood!!

Don't know what it is. Most of my friends are totally not into quality stereo sound. I just don't get it?? But to each his own.

My stereo system and 2 sets of big box speakers can take up just as much space as it wants!

Expensive too.

Creative ZEN VISION:M 30 GB - £177 new (Sold for £72 less commission) : loss £112

Apple ipod Classic 120gb: £170.

That's cost him £282 so far at least.

But I'd be looking to make a straight profit on all the vintage gear I list below, except my Sen 600s and the turntable cartridges I bought new.

It sounds to me like the guy just has some easily annoyed neighbors, and he gave up...
