Sansui 4000 with more wattage?

I believe I can run my Sansui as a preamp but would that loose the warm amazing sound?
does the warmth come from both, or the preamp or amp?

Both, but more the amp than the pre stage. That is a characteristic sound quality of capacitor coupled amps. The 5000 (A and X) and 7000 are the only other Sansui models that are cap coupled, and have greater output power than the 4000.
