Which? Sansui 4000 or Sony STR-7055

Hi, Love both thou the Sony looks awesome. Hear good on the Sansui 4000 thou. Both close in watts and age.

Well, my obvious bias aside, I'm not really familiar with the Sony, and the 4000 is a solid unit that is a bit more reliable and easier to service than it's big brother, the 5000, which has quite a following (to include it's A and X variants).

The 4000 is capacitor coupled of course, and I don't know if the Sony is as well, but that will give it a certain sonic signature that may not be present with the Sony. A fair number of the denizens of this forum - myself included - are quite enamored of the Sansui cap coupled sound, for whatever that's worth.

Hopefully someone here can speak to the Sony STR-7055 and now it compares.

So I listened to both. not good speakers but yes, the Sansui wa hmm silkier, smoother. I went with the Sansui and at home with my Klipsch KG4s, soon to be La Scalas, they are amazing.

Now I am coming from a modern 2021 Sony 190 stereo with all the Bluetooth etc except I have a Wiim Pro so I get streaming perfection with vintage sound.

I am sold on vintage amps.

Looks like we have ourselves another convert. The 4000 isn't a terribly common model to find, though not ultra rare by any means. Because of that, it seems to be somewhat overlooked. Save for a little less output power, it has all the benefits of the 5000 with almost none of the downsides.

The 5000, as originally built, had driver boards that would cause spontaneous destruction of the output stage. That was bad enough in itself, but being a slightly older design the driver boards were hardwired, which made serviceability a little less pleasant. The 4000, at least, has its driver boards pluggable in card edge sockets. I think you made a good call.

Appreciate that. I have been thinking of going a+b speaker with my Klipsch KG4s and Heresys, both very efficient speakers. The receiver never gets warm/hot even at high volumes and I've not gone over half on volume as that shakes the furniture
