Sansui 8080 Pawnshop Special.

Well update on this is I paid someone 130.00 to fix it: they did the Bias and offset, replace some lamps, clean and check.
The lights are all out now and I have been researching on how to do it in the future.
Some back story:
The unit has been in storage for 2 years was living with family during that time. Now i have a place of my own again with the family I can use it again. I had to sell my Sansui 881, Mach ones, a turntable, my oscilloscope before I moved two tube testers and a tube radio project that has not been touched at all.
I still got my soldering iron and multimeter so I have some tools and some knowledge. I put a post in the Introduction for members to see if anyone on here is in Nova Scotia.
Due to Covid some repair shops have closed or places stopped repairing. The shop that did the work gave me a warranty to October of 2018 well that has come and gone.
I emailed another local shop and I am awaiting a reply on the idea of what needs to happen.
From looking over some posts on this issue I am having its the source selector, a fuse on the power board, or something on the EQ board.
I have not done the lights stay on all the time and if i do well i will have to replace those with LEDs. My Vu lights are good they replaced one or all before I got it back I don't remember. I watched a Video an those lights are some small the guy called them wheat grain bulbs.
Is there any risk with using the unit with bulbs not light. I am either using AUX Phono or Tape 1 (which is my Cd player)
ATM for lack of space i have my CD Player on it on the right side with the feet close to the edge and phono on top of that. Is this going to be a issue.
The speakers I am using are Soma 735b 3 way rated 75w and some polk bookself speakers. Barely turning past 2 on volume.
Also at low volume the left sounds louder than the right is this common or a issue. Once I get to before one or at one its fine.

Other than being dark, there is no problem with bulbs out. The left right imbalance is not normal and could be one of several things. Is the balance control centered? If so, it's probably just dirt in the controls. A good cleaning could fix it. It could also be wear in the volume control, the left and right tracks slightly out of phase.

I picked up the Fader Deoxit and it works good as I used it on the pots of the speakers I am using with my 8080. I had used motomaster contact cleaner before hand and follow up with the deoxit.
So update on my 8080.
I am prepping to do a deep clean and contacted the Led man for some bulbs to just do the tuner and it’s meters for now and then do the red wire switch while I am deep cleaning.
This evening the left channel dropped out on fm stereo I changed input it was distorted on auxiliary I played with volume got it back distorted then it cleared up. So I assume it’s do for a deep cleaning.
Is my assumption of that correct or is it going to need some major service.
I talked with two different techs and my problem to them sounds like a 50.00-100.00 job.
For me as long as it doesn’t involve soldering at this point I am happy.

Side items: I have a marantz 5 disc CD player on top with a dual turntable on top of that.
The legs of the CD player are right next to the right edge of the side of the stereo. So the side that has the transformer gets more air flow. Could this have caused my issue to go from lights on to flickering to out to a channel intermittently drop.
An the deck 1 on tape side that I would hook my CD player too has dropped a channel.
it feels like one problem after another and it’s snow balling.

The lugs that hold the fuse lamps in the lamp holder are notorious for cold solder joints. The solder fails over time due to heating and cooling of the lugs that occurs with use. They heat up when the unit is on and cool off when the unit is off.
They probably need to be re-soldered. To repair it you need to remove all the old solder, put paste flux on the lug tabs and apply new solder.

The lamps were all on one day and flickering here and there then went out and the source lamps went out at the same time which leads me to suspect the wafers on the source shaft.
My suspicision is the source shaft for both as at one time Am would light up but FM would not for the tuning lights.
Now with the left channel out i get it back in Mono. I get it back if i play with the Balance in stereo and then it fades out more or less.
I ordered the Led for the tuning and meters bulbs from Dave and he shipped them out today. If switching the red wire works then I am doing that and wanted to have the led bulbs for that.
Now since i have to go that deep i am going to perform a deep cleaning of all pots and switches on the front and what I can reach on the back.

Yes, you are on the correct path. Clean the switches thoroughly and then lubricate once they are functioning properly. Those Sansui receivers usually function fine after a good cleaning.
