I would like everyone's reviews of the Sansui 8080 receiver. Good or bad, personal experience only please. I scored one recently, and am just looking for more info, as there does not seem to be much on AK about them.

I love my 8080DB, unfortunately the Dolby board was not funtioning and had to be bypassed, so no tape loop, but I use it for FM and vinyl only anyway.
Great audio output, a little bright, but not worth complaining about. Solid as a rock.

There is so much that can be said about the Sansui. Rather than spilling a bunch of unneeded words, is there something specific you want to know about it/them?

No, I am just curious what everyone thinks. I will try to take some good pics of mine, and give my impressions when I get it all cleaned up and have time to listen to it a bit.

Already, I have cleaned a lot of dust out, and the grille on top had bad rust on it, mostly on the bottom. I cleaned it up and painted it, it is looking beautiful. The color is only a little darker than the original, which may have faded in the last 40 years.

Rustoleum Universal, Oil Rubbed Bronze. Excellent results.

I have a 9090 and a 9090db. I prefer the db slightly. I had a Marantz only collection going when a tech/friend came across a "museum" G9000. He let me take it home to try and it never went back. :)

The more pix I saw of them xoxo series, the more I fell for the looks of them. That led me to the 9090's. Initially I preferred the sound of the 9090's to the big 9000 and in general still do but there is an art to receiver/speaker matching and I found speakers like the Pioneer BS22's to pair excellent with the 9000. The 9090's seem to be a less specific to a good match.

I think you'll enjoy your 8080. Good luck.

Thank you. I guess the 8080 is mostly the same as the 9090, just lower wattage rating.

Mine is in good condition, other than the vinyl veneer starting to curl near the bottom. I am actually thinking about either enlisting some help making a new solid wood case, or trying to veneer the original.

I love the look of real wood, with a few coats of a good oil varnish.

I have a 8080 Sansui , if it's 80 watts per channel why does it read 520 watts on the back?

If I remember correctly, the 8080 can handle a 4 ohm load, that would be either 2 pairs of 8 ohm speakers or a single pair of 4 ohm.

The reason it says 520 watts on the back is because the amplifier is not 100% efficient. There is power wasted as heat during the amplification. 80watts x2 would only be 160 watts, but there are lamps in it, and all the other parts that use power to run as well. Most of that extra power goes to heat, but it does not probably actually draw that much unless used at maximum output.

How do you like it?

It will drive one pair of 6 ohm speakers with no problem.
