Sansui AU-317 vs. AU-317 Mk-II

Karl - Please confirm that you are able to set the DC-Offset & BIAS Voltages on the Power Amplifier Board – F2754 according to the AU-317's Service Manual data - Also confirm the DC voltage(s) leaving this board to the Head Amp Board - F2751 / Control Amplifier Board – F2752 / Mic Amp Board – F2756 which should be approx +28V & -28V (with respect to GND). (You have already confirmed previously the approx correct DC Voltages at the Power Cap's as OK)

Check the Black 6-wire link ribbon-type cable/lead between Head Amp Board - F2751 & Control Amplifier Board – F2752 for broken or damaged wire(s) - As these are solid single core conductors, they do not take kindly to generous amounts of twisting/flexing. (...and also check the two Black 6-wire link ribbon-type cables/leads between the Control Amplifier Board – F2752 & Filter Board – F2753 as well!)

Also if any PCB tracks and/or Pads lifted when removing and/or replacing components, ensure that the soldered joints are sound and making good contact with the Pad and that the Pad has not broken away from the track(s) - I came across a repair where a PCB pad had lifted, the component soldered ok the the Pad, but it turned out the Pad had broken away from the actual PCB track - This was only found on very close inspection.

EUREKAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

It was the MASTER VOLUME POT!!!!

The Volume pot had some of its pins not properly attached (by pressure) to the small board (rails) inside the ALPS volume knob. I opened the block, cleaned very well with demineraliseerd water, then alcohol 99,97%, then De-oxit (to shine again the copper) and finally I pressed all the pins against the contact until it gets really tight! :smoke:

Then I close the block again, soldered to the board and... :music::music::music:

Thank you, guys! You all are absolutely FANTASTIC!!!!!! :thmbsp::thmbsp::thmbsp::thmbsp::thmbsp:

Good to hear your AU-317 is up and running! - :thmbsp: - Now sit back and enjoy - :music:

Thanks, AUD101!

The sound of this AU-317 is full, rich, spacious, and I have the felling it pushes hard my 2 pairs of speakers. Steve Winwood's "Night Train" (Arc Of A Diver, 1980) is the track to be heard on this amplifier. Basses and synths are just in your face! Amazing!

I found it plenty of mids. I leave the bass and treble flat and play with loudness to supress a bit the mids, but I still have to do the DC Offset. I don't know which pot I have to adjust first, the VR01 or the VR02. I guess the 2k ohms is for a fine tuning, right?

Also, is that true that the gear need some time for the new capacitors or they are ready components?

Anyway, It was the best 25 euros I've ever paid for something!

Nice work Karl, very happy to hear that you have it running, and agreed, the 317 is a very nice amp!!

With regard to the offset adjustment, VR01(VR03) is the fine adjustment, and if the offset is close to 0v, then just adjust the VR01(VR03). If you run out of adjustment, then centre VR01 (VR03), and adjust VR02 (VR04) to get close to 0v, then adjust VR01(VR03) to get 0V.

Cheers

John

Thank you, too John!

Your support, along with AUD101, Pete_Mac and all the others, made it possible!

Greetings from Holland, guys! :beerchug:

That is great news Karl, I am glad all your work paid off on this amp.

I see in your sign you have Magnat speakers.
I have found the vintage Magnat "all Ribbon" series speakers a very good match with the Sansui AU-217/317 amps.

John

Restoring old equipment can become quite addictive, I hope you are aware about that. Dont start visiting kringloopwinkels! :)

If you ever would like to try some other caps I can recommend this german site, very good service and more choice in audio caps than any dutch site ive seen so far.

Yeah, I'm already looking for an AU-517... :D

Yes! The Magnats are really great! I'm looking also for those vintage 3-way Canton speakers!:thmbsp:

Soundwise very close to the AU-317 (IMHO), but with mega build quality.

I have both in my "day-to-day" use racks (O.. now you probably want a Sansui rack also ..sorry).
If I had to choose I would be happy with either one!

Great thread!

I sure wish one of you AU-317 gurus lived on the US west coast. I have a nice one that I picked up for a song ($10) that could use a recap but this type of work is well beyond my non-existent electrical skills. I'd love to pair it with my PX modded and refurbished TU-717 tuner..

Well..... I'm not a guru, but I live on the west coast and I have rebuilt a 317II. It is a pretty easy unit to work on, you might consider trying your luck. Lots of good folks to help you out here.

Uncle Bambi is right: the AU-317 is not that difficult machine to work on. This was my first re-cap and restoration ever and I felt really confident (maybe because I was really excited about this gem of an amp I was looking for a long time).

And living in the US I'd have much more options in choosing easily selected components for it I wish, rather than have quite limited options.

Anyway, I believe folks here would be happy in assist you doing a job on your unit...

Thanks for the words of encouragement folks.

Frankly, with enough hand holding and time, I could probably figure out enough to get the job done. The key words there are "hand holding" and, especially, "time". I just do not have a lot of the latter right now. Perhaps down the line a bit!

In the meantime, my AU-317 isn't going anywhere..
