Sansui SP 2500 Speakers for $30..A Bargain?

Hi,

I came upon a pair a Sansui SP 2500 speakers at a local thrift shop. They are in pretty decent shape. They are asking $30.00 for the pair.

I am running a Kyocera R-661 receiver, 70 watts per channel RMS, and was wondering if some of you Sansui guys could give me an idea as to how these might match up with my system. I would be running them with a pair of JBL E50's which I thought might compensate for the thin low end I've been reading about.

Is it worth taking a chance for $30? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?:scratch2:

How can you go wrong for $30???????????

If the cabs are in nice shape and all the drivers work for $30 you can't go wrong. They're certainly not worth $100 though. A re-cap will help as these speakers are 30+ yrs. old. As long as there isn't another pair of speakers in the same room to compare the sound to you'll be fine.

Somebody thinks they are worth $161.00 plus shipping as a pair just sold TODAY on Eprey for that.

My SP-3500 don't "need" a recap and they are as old. I have the new caps sitting in a box.......don't need em. If it ain't broke...don't monkey with it I say.

And I have a pair of redone Big Advents stacked on mine...........guess what?--------> They "STILL" sound great!

Everyone has different tastes............For $30 the man has nothing to lose and LOADS to gain.

Are they $3000 audiophile speakers??? NO.............Are they worth getting???

Far too much negativity being pushed on Sansui speakers. :sigh:
 
My SP-300s certainly need new caps. There's a "vaugeness" to the highs and mids that I've heard in other speakers that were cured by a recap.

The new caps will probably go in this weekend, and I'll report back.

$30? Hell, boy. Knock-down end tables at Target cost more than that. Grab 'em and run!

Don't do it! The last thing you want is to bitten by the speaker bug. It's bad enough receivers and components, but speakers are space hogs and can really get hairy. Now if they were JBL that's another story :deal:
 
Capester, if they look anything like PMSUMMER's, git in there! They'd have to sound pretty darn bad to not be worth 30 bucks. If they have nice cabinets, recap em and you'll be good.
 
Thanks for the input. I'm supposed to meet him in the morning to pick them up. The cabinets look nice, I'd say an 8 but I haven't taken the grill off yet because I couldn't figure it out in the store. As I now understand it, there are small phillips head screws in the corners. If they look as good under the grills as they do over, then yeah, I'm a buyer. I'm just wondering how they will sound next to my JBL E50's as I plan to run both sets of speakers.
 
O.K. I have to chime in. I owned a pair of 2500's. For the kind of music I listen to most, I did not care for them. Very forward mids and poor bass response. On the other hand they sounded great when listening to jazz.
Vocals were great. In good condition $30 IS a steal.
Speakers do take up alot of room if you are not using them. I have thinned out my speaker collection and only have two pair not in regular use.
I took the KLH 20's to work.
When I ran them with the L100's, the four sounded very nice.
Buy them. If you do not like them sell them.
I sold my 2500's and a 2000a receiver for $100.
Actually the 2000a was the best match for the 2500's. IMO

I'm not even a big fan of sansui speakers, but for 30 bucks you can't go wrong.

Even if you don't like em you can flip em or use them as pretty end-tables :D

Yeow! Someone paid $161.00 for a pair of sp2500's. I'll bet the seller is ecstatic that he reeled someone in. I do believe they are well worth $30 and not much more. I'd get em for that price but certainly not $161.00 plus shipping. I happen to like my sp3500's very much but you have to realize what they are. Beautiful pieces of furniture and ok sounding vintage kabukis at best. Crazy; you may want to try a re-cap. If you're happy with the sound now wait till you recap. You'll be very pleased with the results. If a dufus like myself can do the recap and improve the sound anyone can. Cheer; Brian
 
Harsh on Sansui Speakers

Well I can see very different camps either you like them or you don't. When I first picked up My 1500's I thought they were very dark sounding compared to my Technics (Which I found dumper diving) but just before I got the 1500 for 20bucks for pair I was looking to mod up the technics. I opened the techs cabinets and found a crossover the size of a quarter compared to the sansui crossover :thumbsdn: and I found them way too bright anyway. They are an aquired taste and you got to live with to like them even very expensive speakers are love hate thing. I found once I got them set up right with right speaker cable to be fairly detailed better for vinyl plus the DIY interconnects I made for TT sweetened mids:music:
 
For $30.00 ..go for it. I like the 2500's very much. Have heard them numerous times but not with your receiver. Mostly Pioneer/Sansui receivers
with 40-65 wpc.

To cap or recap is up to you. If you buy them and like what you hear.....recap later if and when needed. The pair of 2500's I heard last where never recapped and sounded just fine. Can play very loud with right gear and I think they sound best about 12" off the floor.

$161 is very high......$75 is not.....but I see sp3500's go for $300-$400 all the time on ebay...........sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...........
I gave $150 for my 3500's and feel I got a deal.

RECAP................naw............don't need it.........why do it? Great bass...great mids..great highs.

And---------> kabuki is a catch term that has no meaning in my vocabulary...........I listen to and enjoy what I like.........not follow a herd or fall prey to audio-speak.

Everyone should do the same. :yes:

Well guys, I appreciate all the input...and boy, there was a lot more than I expected!! So anyway, here's what happened.

I went this morning to meet the guy as agreed. This time he had his wife hanging around. Also, consider that this is basically a junk store. They are going out of business and closing the doors on Saturday. Anyway, I got out my little phillips head and removed the grill. Not bad condition. I decided that, what the hell, for $30.00, I'm a buyer. Just then the wife gets involved....

"Earnest, what the hell you doin' sellin them Sansui's?" Well. Ma'am, Earnest quoted me $30.00 for the pair. That'll be something else you don't have to pack up, says I. "Well, I can't let them speakers go for less than $50.00!" My son Scotty says that he wanted 'em".

I looked at Earnest and said," Sir, are you a man of your word? We had a deal and I came here with a dolly to cart them away. What's it going to be?

Have you ever seen the air go out of a balloon? He looked at his wife, slinked, then said he had something to do somewhere. So the Mrs says to me, "My son is gonna be real upset with me young man cause I'm gonna sell you those speakers for $50.00."

In the most polite tone I could muster, I said, "Ma'am, I think the only disappointment that Scotty is gonna have is having to clean the sh*t off these speakers after he's done pulling them out of your ass!!"

I then turned and walked away feeling remarkably good. I think the audio gods saved me from a potential piece of junk!

So, thanks for all the advice but you know, A deals a deal!! As far as I'm concerned they could have been brand new out of the box. I don't like when people try to take advantage of me. Your word is your BOND!
 
capeman51; You did the right thing. A deals a deal no matter what. Maybe those 2500's were worth $50 on their best day. Don't fret it something better will come along and you'll be rewarded. And believe me; it won't take much to better the sound of those 2500's.
