Sansui SP 2500 Speakers for $30..A Bargain?

I then turned and walked away feeling remarkably good. I think the audio gods saved me from a potential piece of junk!

They weren't junk, but it's obvious why the "junk store" was going out of business. I think Jimmy Velvit wrote a song about her...

good show!

Yep.....I would have walked too. :thmbsp:

Too bad the man who made the deal with you did not have the "minerals" to stick his foot right up his wifes...................

It was for sure a fate thing..........your destiny lies with other speakers. :scratch2:

But the lesson to be learned is "strike while the iron is hot" ..........cause many times.... "if you snooze.......you lose".

And as far as the Sansui speaker bashing..........I thought this was a Sansui collector/lovers forum...................not a speaker god elite forum-----????----------->:scratch2: :D :D :D

All them unwanted and hated Sansui speakers can just be sent straight to me........I like em!:thmbsp:

Thanks for the supporting posts. I am sure my "speakers of destiny" will come along. Thanks MOTORSTEREO, I agree with you, A DEALS A DEAL!

I have a pair. They are mint, and haven't been recapped.

I'm pretty forgiving, but these things sound just dreadful for what I listen to...

Took the woofers out....they are HUGE!

Crossover is very nice! Tweeters and "squawkers" are well built...

what gives???

Is the box too shallow? Went to fill the box with fiberfil, it was already stock filled. So again...

WHAT GIVES??

Any ideas on how to upgrade, other than recap?

Hi, I have a pair of the 2500's, in mint condition. And have just started playing them through my Sony STR-DH 550 receiver, which is 145 W per channel 5.2.

I was using 2 small satellite speakers from a home theater in a box for my R and L fronts, but put these in instead, what do you think of this decision? They seem to play much better, louder and tons of bass.

These speakers say 80 W, but they seem to work well. Should I be concerned about the power coming from the receiver ?

Also, for a 5.1 setup, what would be the best dial position for these, b/c I have a powered subwoofer, CLEAR / NATURAL / SOFT ?

Thank you.

Let your ears make the decision on setting.

Also, you really need to recap. I gave my pair to my sister, who let her beast of a child not only poke the dustcaps in, he ripped the cones clean out of the basket. They went from mint to utterly destroyed in 1 year. I regret not keeping them, as they were furniture-pretty, and I suspect would have sounded great had I recapped and broken that stiff surround in. It hardens over the years on surrounds like that.

You sound happy with your setup, just enjoy it!

And........WELCOME TO AUDIOKARMA!!!!!!

Mine run off either my 1000A or one of my 2000 series (no suffix, "A" suffix, or "X" suffix) and sound fine. But connect them to anything else and it's like night and day. On the PIONEER's (SX737,790,939) The bass is damned near non existant unless bass is cranked to 11 and the loudness is on, but then the mids and highs are too shrill. On the FISHER 800C or 400 they just sound blah. It's kinda like the porridge in the Goldilocks story, 1 too hot(PIONEER), 1 too cold(FISHER's) and 1 JUUUSSSSSSTTT Right (SANSUI). I havne't tried them on the FISHER S.S. receivers from the late 60's yet.

Yeah, I'm amazed the amount of bass these 2500's have compared to my little RCA satellite speakers I was using before that came from a home theater in a box 15 yrs ago; night and day. WOW

Currently my subwoofer is offline being repaired, but do you guys think hooking up the subwoofer will help with the bass direction from these monsters to the subwoofer? Sony STR-DH 550 receiver 5.1 ch. Thank you for the quick replies. great forum.

capeman51.... Great story! And a great ending..... Yes.... "Be impeccable with your word" is one of the 4 agreements for a reason.
I'm glad you walked.... (and I'm a guy that has had the speaker bug his whole life!)

I had two mint pairs of the 2500's. Sold one pair and still have the other. Bought these cheap back when I was actively seeking vintage gear. they are beautiful pieces of cabinitry for sure. The sound was from its time. Speakers have come a long way since then. They aren't audiophile speakers and were never meant to be. They are great for someone putting togeather an all vintage Sansui system of the correct time period.
I don't play mine as I have vintage speakers that sound much better than those but I will admit that I like having them! I guess its the "materialistic" in me. I would sell them though if someone wanted them, as I have too many speakers taking up too much space at the house.

I like Sansui speakers. I have many pairs, and one thing I have noticed, for sure. If you run anything other than Sansui source amplification, there is a big difference in sound. These speakers shine on Sansui receivers, Pioneer? Not so much. I'm running SP-2500 and SP-200 on a 9090db, and they sound great. I've switched out with 4311B and L-100 just to play around. The JBL sound great on anything I've put them on, kinda like the Sony SS-TL5. Even with an eq, the Sansui just don't shine on anything else like they do their own. I've not re-capped yet - that's next, just to satisfy my curiousity. Because the SP-200 I have, are the exception. They sound good on anything I've put them on.

I'll chime in again.

I had a second pair that I took to an AK get together and had them set up with an Eight Deluxe. I tried to give the speakers away and nobody wanted them. Ugh, do I really have to drag these home.
Then as I was loading them, a fine AK'er said he would take them. Yes!

Well, he did some mods and likes them very much.

Bottom line is, you will have to get a pair and try them for yourself. My advise is don't pay too much.

Sansui speakers sound great with tube amps too - any coincidence, given the legend that the AU-111 was used to "voice" their solid state amps?

Sansui SP-2500A for $12 apiece.

There are three.

I’m tempted to get all three.

I think they are worth $12/each as refinished (by me) end tables or speaker stands.

Cabs aren’t great but not bad either. Probably pretty average I’m guessing. Like a 6/10.

No major damage but typical wear in the corners and a variety of small nicks and scars.

The cabs are freaking HEAVY!!

This will by first foray into using a sander since a summer job when I was 17.

Maybe these might be good candidates to practice on so I don’t fork up refinishing the cabs on my Polk 7Bs or Nova 8Bs...
