Sansui SR-838 $200 BIN

I was looking at this auction and the first price, $200 and was thinking of all the very good Japanese tables of the era that go for peanuts and will equal this table. Since I have just rebuilt a Sony PS-X7 I thought about looking at the Sony tables on that auction site and saw a PS-X6 given away to the purchaser of a Shure V15 III without stylus (provided the buyer wanted to pay shipping), a PS-X7 for $100 with no bids, relisted for 9.99 and a number of days to go. There were also a couple PS-X600 (looks nice) for 150 or 75 depending on which one was purchased.

There have to be a number of other companies that made tables the are worth the $200 that had folks jumping for this one that can be bought for much less. But then there are two very important issues that make a big difference. One is the desire to buy a certain brand and the other is the variable packing skills of the 'bay sellers making a purchase of at table safest by picking up the unit in person.

So I'm wondering how much of the value of this table was in the brand name?

Probably a lot of value in the brand, since Sansui made some excellent gear. A nice SR-838 usually goes for $300-400+. It's a very heavy, well constructed, solid performer.

And the SR-939's for a lot more than that. Not all Sansui TT's are that well made but the 636, 838, and 939's are very nice.

wasnt there one more higher in this line? I could have sworn ive seen a 938 once.......

Sorry Guys, I snagged this one for my brother. It was on his wish list. I sure hope it arrives in one piece. He reaaly wanted one with the Sansui name and a direct drive model.

And oh yeah for him the Sansui name is the defining factor of his wish list. It will go nicely with the G-9000 thats on its way. Hummm now what does he need to add?

Congrats kangatoy on a very nice table. Hope it gets to your brother safely.

jdwk, this site has the answer to your question:

As far as the price of this table, I think it is a deal if it arrives in good condition. The desire to have a certain brand is well worth $50 or so. This is a nice table and the new owner should be very happy with it.

Guess this table wasn't such a good deal afterall.

The box arrived 3 days ago. Nice small rattling sound as the postman handed the box to me. The outside carton was not what I would call rigid cardboard. Upon opening I found that the dust cover is shattered. It appeared the seller had tried to pack well, removed the platter etc, lots of bubblewrap and soft foam strips, but in a softer carton I guess it didn't survive a drop on the corner.

I immediately emailed the seller, since it was shipped insured. No response yet, but since it is a holiday weekend I'll keep my hopes up.

Is there any way to repair the clear plastic dustcover? At least all the pieces are here.

Sorry to hear about the damage to the dust cover. Did everything else survive unscathed? There is an AK vendor that builds custom dust covers. You might want to get a quote from them and have the seller spot you on that.

Good luck.

You can buy a new one here:http://www.turntabledepot.com they're much heavier than the originals, but they're also expensive.
