Sansui SR-838 vs. Yamaha PF 1000 - Opinions on differences?

Hello: I have a nicely operating Sansui SR-838 (with an Ortofon 2M Bronze). I've been using it for a decade. I have access to a Yamaha PF 1000 for $800 (no cart), which appears to be in fine shape, but is too far away to listen to. Anyone have any experience with the Yammie compared to the Sansui?

I've had both and both are great tables. Sansui is DD & 1000 is belt. The only thing is the tracking force setter on the 1000 can get wonky, mine was. But can be adjusted with the counterweight and digital scale. You'll just have to check it out and see if you like it. $800 is a little high, I'd say. Cording to condition & what accessories are with it, cartridge, etc.

Any other takers here - I have a line on three (3!!!) different PF-800s. Thanks for any other responses!

You have a C-4 and an M-2. A PF-800 or PF-1000 will get along quite well with that setup. Ditch the Bronze and get virtually any version of an Audio Technica cart with a microline stylus and you will really be enjoying life.

Hi again: still pondering how much better, if at all, a Yamaha PF 800 (or 1000) will sound than my existing Sansui SR-838. After reviewing the specs, the only differences I see are as follows:

PF800 vs. SR 838:
Drive Belt Drive Two-speed vs. quartz-servo, direct-drive, manual turntable
Platter 0.86kg zinc (inner), 1.63kg aluminium (outer); 2.49kg total vs. 318mm, 1.7kg, aluminium die-cast 350mm
Signal to noise ratio better than 80dB vs. better than 64dB
Wow and flutter less than 0.028% WRMS vs. less than 0.025%
Pitch/fine speed more than +/- 6% vs. +/- 2.5%

What spec or other consideration might influence the sound quality than the above? Thanks for your insights and help! S p.s. I'd likely be using either a Soundsmith Otello ES or a Ortofon Bronze on the Yammie, since those I have now.

I have owned PF800 and listened to the Sansui a lot at a friend's place. This is a little apples and oranges if you ask me. Belt drive spring suspended table versus a DD with a fairly heavy plinth. The real only way to know is to buy it and see. Move it along if you don't like it.

Knowing what I do now, I think I would give the Sansui the nod. Wood floors and a PF do not mix well.

Gracias for the insights jblnut. Indeed, I live in a 95 year old house with wood floors! I would have thought a suspended table like the PF would do better with funky floors? No? I don't get any floor skips for the most part inspite of the old house - maybe just once or so perhaps year two years or so someone steps just right in the living room and a skip, maybe less.

Not the same tables but, I have a suspended deck & a heavy plinth deck & the suspended is very sensitive to footfalls.
The heavier deck is almost immune. I would have thought the opposite too...

Hello Again Yammie Turntable Experts: I was just purusing the Vinyl Engine speces on the PFs 1000 and 800. Is it true that the PF 800 is vinyl wrapped ie not a 'real wood' finish plinth. Could be a deal breaker for me. Thanks for the help!
