Picked up this rare bird today from a local collector. All bulbs were replaced but not recapped, Haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet but for $125 I own an extremely nice example of this Sansui tuner.

754EFD32-F8CC-41BA-9CD3-F9DEAF50EAC3.jpeg I’ve got one of those too. Picked mine up about 4 years ago and have never touched it since! You’ll have to let me know how you like it. Mine is paired with a very early Fisher solid state amp. I’m honestly fearful of firing it up, because I don’t want to harm it! Both are mounted in a cabinet. Mine still has the original protective plastic coating attached to the faceplate from the factory (it was never removed)!

Nice !! Mine still has the schematics Attached to the bottom as well. I might go back later for the AU-555a he had. If I didn’t have a AU 717 the 555a would be mine as well

Do the knobs match on your 717 and 666? Sansui seemed to switch knobs frequently, making it hard to get a tuner and amp to match, unless they came as an original pair (at least in my experience).

^ I'd guess that there is little cultural significance attached to the "triple six" in Japan and thus they had no reason to shy away from using it as a model number. Historically in countries where Christianity is a prevalent religion (and it isn't so much in Japan) there is some discomfort associated with that number for biblical reasons.

Funny too that many series of Sansui gear skipped the model that would've begun with a 6. There was no model 6000 receiver (but was a 5000 and a 7000). There was no 6900Z. No AU/TU-6900, 617 or 619. There was however a 6060 receiver, and a SR-636 turntable among others. Kind of wonder why they skipped the sixes so often.

Makes me think back to when Intel did a Pentium MMX CPU with a clock speed of 667 MHz. Could've used the marketing line "faster than all hell" but that would probably have been in poor taste.

Anyway, nice score on that tuner. I've been intrigued by these annular dial face tuners for years but have yet to pick one up. They certainly have a unique look, and i like it.

It’s a match with the AU-555a & 7500

Looks like you’ve got a little Kenwood TU-60 underneath. I’ve got its cousin the 60bu (the equal released to the Japanese and Euro market).

Interesting thought!

It’s actually a full recap with new lamps 60BU/ muIti-voltage unit picked both up today. Can’t wait to hear it. What Speakers are you pairing with it. ?

I’ve got mine hooked up to a pair of vintage Ampex speakers that have very early JBL drivers in them. Tried them with some Klispch Heresy’s and they paired well too. Need efficient speakers with the little guy and both pair worked well. I don’t use mine often because my DC offset runs high. I need to recap mine too...

Yeah, they we’re made in the “Wild West” era of solid state receivers. Pull the hood back, and it’s controlled chaos! No real mounting boards, just a wild controlled soldering bunch of chaos. These baby’s are a jewel, and were all hand made. Awesomely me little pieces of electronic history!
