Schiit Fans ?

nice! The personal reports on the Stjarna have been slow in coming.
That thing is way more than my budget for such a thing, but I was considering eventually replacing my Mani II with that newer Skoll thing. Having read some reviews though it seems that the Skoll, while having more features and more flexibility isn't really any better from a pure sonic perspective, so I think I'll skip it. Not that I have any issue with the Mani II, I just wonder what I might be missing. It's kind of amazing just how good Schitt's most inexpensive products can be...

It is because very few people have bought them due to the cost (a bit on the pricey side). I have it warming up in the living room now, and experimenting with different cartridges. The background is not a black as the Skoll's, but that is to be expected with tubes. With my Freya+ preamp turned up to 5/8 volume (2PM) I don't hear any noise in my speakers with the gain at 40db, a tiny bit of hiss within 6" of the speaker at 47db... at 55 and 60db there is a slight hiss within 12-18", but nothing that could distract from the music once it is playing.

With my AT-VM740xML cart (3.2 mV output) is plays very well at the 40db and 47db settings...main difference is at 40db I have the volume knob at 1PM, at 47db volume is good at is at 11:30AM (when listening to FM or Bluesound Node X 12 o'clock is the best setting, Rotel CD player likes 11AM). Very very quiet at 40db- I think I'll leave it there.

With my Ortofon Concorde Music Bronze cart (6 mV output) the records better be super clean, as any amount of dust at all and it pops and crackles- this cart is going back on the old Marantz 6200 where it is happy (did the same thing with my Skoll). It seems the Stjarna prefers carts that are on the lower output side, which bodes well for using MC carts.

1st album up this morning was David Gilmore's Luck and Strange - I could feel every pluck, strum, and bend in my finger tips (fellow guitar players will know what I mean). Aja and Brothers in Arms are in the queue then probably DSOTM and Animals... going to be FUN !

The Skoll is excellent sounding and convenient to use with the remote control, plus it is completely neutral and dead quiet- it does make a significant difference if the rest of your system is also very good, but if you have run of the mill or home theater equipment you won't hear much difference.

I bought the Stjarna because I like the slightly warmer sound my hybrid tube/solid state Pro-ject Tube Box DS2 gives, and I wanted to see if a phono premp that is all tube powered sounds better... so far I have to say that it does.

Well... I would say that my system is maybe between the "run of the mill/home theater" and the "very good" that uou speak of, it being run by an old Marantz receiver, which is very good sounding to my ears, but probably not the most resolving amp. Still, it's good enough that I could tell a real difference between several phono preamps and several DACs that I've used with it, though I have to wonder if there's a kind of upper level of gear that wouldn't really be appreciated with the amp (and less than super-high end cart) that I'm using. I do feel that my Mani phono pre is very quiet...

that has not been my experience at all. I’ve found it to be a significant step up from the Mani 2

Well, my fun has been cancelled until Monday... wife is pulling some rare passive aggressive crap: sat down next to me and started watching U-tube music videos on her I pad... I was like WTF? she said I'm tired of hearing the same old stuff again...

To keep harmony in the house the stereo is now paying her Tidal playlists while I go find something else to do until Monday.

Hehe. Sounds like she big-timed your new toy.
Stjarna is an interesting product, although a bit rich for my level of vinyl listening.
I do not mean this in a pejorative way, but it seems like a vanity project at Schiit. I'm glad they are killing it enough to indulge in this. I love their stuff.

Well I got to play with the Stjarna for hours on end today ! Very sweet sound after the tubes warm up, but they don't really "warm up" if you only have the unit turned on but aren't playing anything through it (and not on standby which turns off the tubes): I turned it on then listened to my streamer for an hour before I put on an LP. The first LP was Gaucho, it sounded just like my Skoll, by the second side of second album (Aja BTW) the magic holography happened.

Followed that up with DSOTM : guitars and keyboards were fantastic, male voices a bit hard to make out (why???), female voices outstanding. Next up was and Animals and I had crazy ass pigs oinking all around my living room- Wild !

Switched gears to Gordon Lightfoot, America, Seals and Crofts, and Carol King- all excellent- acoustic guitars really shine, as do brass and woodwind instruments (the Stjarna will probably will play very well with Jazz if you're into that).

Johnny Cash's deep rumbling voice (especially when he got old) was better than I've ever heard him, and Willie Nelson's high pitched voice was unbelievably sweet- I could listen to those two all day long singing in their natural voices, none of that fake TWANG that the current Country/Western singers add (I hate that crap) .

Hard rock that is only guitars and heavy drums was nothing special - just sounded like the Skoll (Guns N' Roses, Golden Earring, Pearl Jam, etc) except for Zeppelin when Page is playing acoustic or Plant is playing harmonica- those were excellent. It seems the Stjarna really shines with music that has lots of different instruments going together. I could pick out each individual instrument and their placement.

I will play mostly Classical music tomorrow (Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven) to give small and large ensembles their chance at greatness ! oohh forgot to add in some Sade- I'll bet she sounds killer

I’m hoping that one and a half sides before it opens up thing goes away with break in.

They have produced quite a number of new products and more to come this year. I think Jason said that they hadn't decided if the Stjarna was going to be a one off run or a continuing product.

Just received Skoll F. Immediately I am surprised the case is not better. Looks like the case fastens by a metal tab going into a slot at the front of the unit, and it is fastened with two screws at the rear. If the tab was the same height as the slot it would be fine but the entire metal top is rocking up and down about 1mm in the slot.

I just took the top off of one of mine, there is a flange on the bottom of the top that slides into a small slot on either side of the base (only about 1/8" long)..one side yours may not be in the slot (or the flange is bent). The tops on both of mine are pretty tight. Hint: before you remove the top, put some tape over the buttons to hold them in place- it is a PIA to put the top back on if you're fumbling with loose buttons. They use some pretty good Nichicon caps in there.

No this is different, maybe a new style of case? The top wraps over the front and top only, no keyhole slots as in your picture. There are two pieces of felt stuck on the top of the unit so that it does not "clang" when the top moves but when I have my tools back (house move) I will have to make the front slots a tighter fit to stop the top moving.
(it doesn't "clang" when the top has any weight on it, that's the felt working - it only clangs when released and the tongue at front is stopped by the top of the slots - they are just too big, or the case top is a lighter gauge than was designed for)

I played e-mail tag with Schiit about this (actual people, not the AI). Originally Jason planned one run of Stjarna (200 or so) in black and a second run in silver. However sales are slow (too pricey for most of the guys who buy Schiit equipment) so I was told there are no plans to do a second run in silver... they better not be lying to me !

Try bending the flange a bit where it goes in the slot. Weird that you have Gold Nichicon (UFW) small caps and some red Wurth brand big caps while I have Blue Nichicon (UKA) small caps and all Nichicon big ones... Looks like they use whatever they can get that fits the specs. I just noticed that your board layout is different than mine...my board says SKOLL 1.0, yours appears to say SKOLL 1.50 and many caps are in different locations, but mine is almost two years old, yours brand new- I wonder if there is a big difference in SQ???

One of my Freya+ preamps uses Epcos (TDK) caps and German Wurth caps, the other has CDM (Cornell Dubilier) and Epcos caps.

So today I played all kinds of various albums through the Stjarna, coupled with the previous days listening this is my impression without all the audiophile lingo like "Air" and all that other crap :

Classical musics sound quality depended completely on the the recording. Most of what I played sounded the same as it does when using the Skoll phono amp, a couple were wondrous: the movie sound tracks to Amadeus (Mozart) and Immortal Beloved (Beethoven). Baroque/Chamber music when recorded with several microphones was very good, with only one or two mics it was nothing special. Large Symphonies were the same, the more mics the better the sound.

70's and folk music: Gordon Lightfoot, America, Seals & Crofts, Van Morrison, Carol King, James Taylor, early Springsteen, early Eagles, Bog Seger, Neil Young, CSN, etc all were great, acoustic guitars come through sweet and full. Brought back so many fond memories of my youth.

80's music: Tears for Fears, Joe Jackson, Howard Jones, Til Tuesday, Simply Red, The Cars, Genesis, Sade etc. all sounded spectacular, especially with keyboard harmonies in the background with guitars up front and an occasional sax... just excellent.

90's Alternative: Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Candle Box, Collective Soul, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. Sound was meh, not enough instruments to make it interesting (still good, but nothing special).

The best sounding music in my collection are also my two all time favorites: Steely Dan and Pink Floyd... so many different things going on in Steely Dan tunes, and the guitar and keyboard melodies in Floyd just sound so vivid, the sustain on Gilmore's notes is insane.

Conclusion: make sure your albums are CLEAN, play music with harmony /melody. Heavy guitar-drums with no other instruments are just bland (AC/DC was decent though) - sorry headbangers, the Stjarna is not for you, and maybe not for those who mainly listen to classical - stick to the $399 Skoll and you'll be more than happy.

BOTTOM LINE: (1). Is the Stjarna worth four times the cost of the Skoll? ($399 vs $1699) (2). Is it four times better sounding?

(1). Depends on your wallet - I retired well and my house and cars are all payed off, so a $1700 toy doesn't affect the budget and IMO it is a keeper.
(2.) No... maybe 10-15% better on SOME music, on some types (heavy metal /classical) you won't hear a difference. It is just a bit sweeter sounding than my Pro-Ject Tube Box DS2 (which I love), but that is just something intangible and subjective. It would probably make a more noticeable difference in SQ if you have it hooked up to an all solid state preamp, not a tube preamp like the Freya+. Maybe tomorrow I will put the Freya+ into passive mode bypassing the tubes to see how the Stjarna does on its own.

Pretty significant changes to the Skoll's circuit board between the original 1.0 version and the "forkbeard" 1.5 version, they moved a lot of stuff around:

I've owned plenty of Schiit gear and man do those guys iterate fast. Pieces come and go from their offerings seemingly by the month. Earlier on their bread and butter were pieces that didn't cost that much but they now have some pieces that are edging into the bigger-money space. What happens to the value of an amp or other Schiit piece at the top of their range when it disappears from their web site in a few months? Do those pieces retain value over time if they were only made for a short period of time, almost experimentally?

Back in 2022 Schiit made 250 each of a headphone amp called "Folkvangr" which used 10 tubes... they sold out very quickly at $1800... if you can find one today for sale (rare) they run $1500-$1800.

The common Freya+ sells for $999 new, used ones go for $750-$850..... where else can you get a 5 year warranty and excellent resale value ?
