On the 222D schematic are two caps 5 NPO, in the amp they are tiny black ceramic looking. Anybody know for sure what these are?

If these capacitors are tiny with stripes looking like a short resistor, they are ceramic and are not bad. They are very low value. If you are looking at a Sams schematic, they might be mislabeled. You may want to use caution ... Leave them as is.

I made the mistake of changing them years ago and caused major problems. As memtioned, schemacic would help.

Just black, thought NPO meant non polarized...but in this case, they are in schematic as C13

They sure do look like ceramic capacitors connected to the scratch filter. If they are tiny, about the size of a ½-watt carbon composition resistor, they are ceramic capacitors, referred to in the LK-72 assembly manual (very similar to the 222D except for the output section) as "CC" which I suspect means "Ceramic Capacitor".

They are good. Where you need to be careful is when you have a capacitor connected to the grid of a tube (leakage of DC).

Here is an excerpt from parts list in the LK-72 assembly manual (which is essentially the same as the 222D as far as the preamplifier is concerned). That capacitor should be OK unless physically damaged. Where the confusion enters in is the nomenclature of the value. It is not "µFD" rather something like µµFD (mmf). Look at CC-.22. No way it is .22µFD. On my first restoration, I made that mistake and you never heard such a howl and feedback!!!

I got help from the now dead HH Scott Forum. We lost a lot of good technicians when the forum portion of that site went missing.

EDIT Reason: Add Text to hopefully remove confusion.

The LK48 (or 222C) assembly manual identifies them also as ceramic capacitors, i.e. by definition bipolar. I agree just leave them alone.

Heavens yes, by all means. They are the absolutely most reliable part in that amplifier other than the screws in the chassis :)
