Scott Copley 203 Console

Is there another part to that thing? Nothing there looks (to my luddite eyes anyway) like a power section. That, and the Molex connector on the back, make me think that perhaps there is a separate power amp section.
there is a power section, it's solid state. Those four caps on the back side are transistors. This must have been a late model.

"dynaural.."

A supply section was an external block, probably located in a power amplifier block. It was possible to find connecting points and solve the issue of power, but another problem was to find audio output. SB mixed tubes in output stage and it was hardly to find which tubes were there. That was the reason I asked if anybody had a contact with the "DYNAURAL..".

Here is the tube inventory (some were hard to read and I may have some digits wrong)...

6 @ Telefunken 12AX7 (Western Germany)
2 @ Telefunken 6U8 (Western Germany)
Scott 6KE8 (Gr Britain)
Scott ECC85 (Gr Britain)
Scott 6BS8 (USA)
Scott AU6A (USA)
Scott 6HS6
Pro/Comm 12AX7A
Scott 6BA6 (USA)
Scott 6BE6 (USA)

Pictures here if you want to see them.

I don't know if the Teles are smooth plate or ribbed plate or even what that means.

Fantastic score! I love the cabinet

Here is a picture of the smooth and ribbed plate Tele's. I have two more rib plates that look different than these but they are in my pre-amp and are too hard to get to for photos.

Sadly, the smooth plate in the picture is a goner.:tears:

Killer console dude.Who ever replaced the tubes with Telefunkens knew what they were doing:thmbsp:

I think those are stock tubes. The Scott amps I have used over the years came with Telefunken smooth plate 12AX7's and 6U8's. The other tubes were branded Scott.

BTW, that "Pro/Comm" 12AX7A is in the same area as 3 of the Teles. They all seem to be amp tubes rather than EQ or tuner. I'm going to try to find a place to test my tubes. Assuming that the Tele's all test good, I suspect that the Pro/Comm was to replace a defective tube and that I sould try to get a single Tele from eBay to replace it.

What say ye?

I would just see how it sounds. Tele's are not the only good 12AX7. A lot of folks dislike the Tele smooth plates. I have them in one MC40 amp and rib plates in the other MC40. I can't really hear any difference in sound.

The A on the end of the Pro/com tube means it has a slow warm up IIRC. I guess it is to prolong the tubes life.

Interesting. I was getting some erratic performance from my "new" Scott 222-D and found that two of the 4 12AX7's tested bad. I swapped all 4 out for matched pairs of Telefunken and RCA 12AX7's I had laying around. Problems went away.

The RCA black plate is an excellent 12ax7.

That pic is really helpful. Which is more desirable, smooth or ribbed?

Like I said some folks don't like the smooth plate. They claim it smears the sound in the upper frequencies. I did notice that the rib plate had a much warmer sound when I rolled in a pair to replace the bad smooth plate and it's mate in the output section of my C2200. I still have the smooth plates in the phono amp. I will be damned if I here any smearing of the sound.

I am experimenting with using 50,60, and 70's 12AX7 American tubes. The results have been quit good. I seem to prefer the RCA 12AT7's black plates in my pre-amp over the teles I had in there. Very open sound that does not color the pre-amp as much as the tele's did. At $65 a quad, which included shipping, you can't beat the price. next up I am going to try some RCA 12AX7 black plates in place of the Tele rib plates.

To answer your question, I believe most people would go for the rib plate Tele's.

When Scott built these amps, I am sure they got the best pricing on tubes they could get. I don't think it had anything to do with the sound of the amp. Every Scott amp I have used over the years had Tele smooth plates in the pre-amp and phono stage and 6U8 Teles in the phase splitter.

The esoteric pricing of the European tubes has really gotten out of hand. There a many great American made 12AX7 tubes out there and you don't have to mortgage your house to buy them.
