Please can I have some quick advice on which unit I should buy? They are both comepletely restored and in excellent shape...I'm buying one or the other today and I'm really on the fence for Classic hi end Accuphase solid state or going the tube route. Help me Rhonda!

Altec 890c bolero horn speakers, mid 90s efficiency rating I think

Fairly large living room

I want to have the capacity for pretty high listening volume. I want the amp to be able to play louder than I want. Really hoping the tubes can provide this on horns at 35wpc. I know the 202 can for sure

Love classic jazz, 60s Rock, modern electronic music, 70s prog rock, folk, hard rock Really all over the place.

Price for each amp is exactly the same. And both are plug and play ready, fully restored.

You cannot run the Altec 890c Boleros to high volume under any circumstances. You will blow the tweeter diaphragms, which are unobtanium at this time.

With larger horn Altecs, either amp would be a good choice, the ahh Scott will be smoother.

13 years ago, Bill Hayes had the Heppner replacement tweeter repair. I think he had died. The 890cs could only handle 50 watts when new, it may be half that now.

Thanks for the input, it's still a really tough choice, I'm leaning towards tubes but I may want to upgrade to larger less efficient speakers at some point. I will let you know what I end up going with. I have run the altecs with fairly high wattage solid state amps (75-80wpc) for the past few years with some success, perhaps stupidly given that I didn't know the fragile design limitations to this speaker model.

Well I ended up with the Accuphase E 202. Just bought it yesterday on Audiogon. Really excited, hopefully it will survive shipping. In the end I didn't have the heart to commit to tubes right now. The Accuphase just seemed too good to pass up. I beleive the lk 72 amps are fairly common, more so then the e 202 at least so there is a better chance later on to get that model as well As far as speakers go, not sure what to do with the boleros. It's may be time to sell and upgrade speakers to match the accu's power capabilities and overall sound. Any opinions welcome. I do have some AR 4ax that can handle higher powered ss amps, but I want to move into floor standing altecs or maybe the 2ax ARs.
