Thanks I don't see much difference between the 5.5 and 6.5 except maybe the heft? I talked to the seller, it's a 6.5! :thmbsp:

Concept 6.5 - brought it home, pictures

Woohoo - I just got home after picking up this receiver. :banana: :banana:

The seller had it setup on the kitchen counter with a pair Minimus7 speakers. It was easy enough to get ALOT of bass out of those little speakers with the unit which is rated at 65 WPC.

I found it to be as he described on the phone, looks and sounds very good with no noise in the controls except a very small crackle when spinning the balance control. So it could use some cleaning on the controls, the AM antenna bar is broken off (looks like someone thought it was a handle :nono: )but otherwise very clean looking and great cosmetics.

We talked audio a bit, compared notes on repair work at Wedgewood audio (before the guy retired), and John and Northwest audio (he had favorable reviews and recommended him), and I took the receiver to my car for the 20 mile drive home. I'm looking forward to some extended listening this weekend - I think it will go into my small room system with Speakerlab 7's and Heresys.

All in all it looks very solid and I think I did Ok for $65!... :music: Some pictures:

Thanks Nick and Mark. I've moved the Concept 6.5 into my bedroom system and will post a listening report / comparison to the Marantz 2245 which I had been using there with my stacked Speakerlab 7's + Heresys.

Mark - Report on the G sale trip: the "Pop Culture/Vintage Extravaganza" garage sale in Arlington turned out to be worth the trip but not quite the jaw-dropper we were expecting. There were 4 boxes of tasty classic rock LPs for 75 cents each. I came away with 23 keepers and Rick/Klownschool had 21 LPs. There were two other vinyl-hounds at the opening bell, so we each rotated around the boxes. I picked up a Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced? and Grand Funk American Band (didn't know this was produced by Todd Rundgren?) on the Gold vinyl which I think is pretty cool for a G sale. Rick and I hit other sales along HWY 9 on the way back - Rick claimed he actually could smell vinyl in one neighborhood sale as we were walking through the cul-de-sac :dunno: - and sure enough the third garage had a box full of great clean vinyl, most for $1. :thmbsp: :music:

Thanks Steve - yeah I have a theory about all the gear we see here, probably true other places too, I recall when back in the 70's the first thing everyone did when they got a job was buy a kick-ass stereo system from Magnolia HiFi or some other retailer. I think alot of people here use CL - the electronics list just scrolls by all day long with interesting stuff.

The market penetration must have been close to 100% for the boomer generation here, again probably true lots of other places. But now alot of folks my age realize that they aren't using that old gear and are tossing it out there on CL, in G sales, or at thrift stores.

I'm not only seeing alot of stuff for sale, but alot of stuff just put on CL for FREE. I picked up a nice SX-636 the other night along with some EPI M100 speakers = FREE. Dual 1019 TT = FREE. 119 good condition 70's rock/jazz/classical LPs = FREE. along with alot of BPC gear for FREE. It's nuts. :screwy: :thmbsp:

I was talking with Klownschool today and he was suggesting, instead of hitting G sales that we could pretty much just go door to door asking people if they wanted to sell their vintage gear. At two different G sales today, we had other shoppers tell us that they had records they wanted to sell. There's probably good stuff in every other garage in alot of neighborhoods - again that's probably true in lots of places. It's alot of fun. :thmbsp:

Ok, I've had a chance to spend a few listening sessions with the Concept receiver and it probably not fair to compare to the Marantz 2245 which was previously in the bedroom system because its 45 WPC vs 60 WPC and both units have not been serviced so they're in an indeterminate state, but subjectively the Concept blows the Marantz out of the water. The effortless muscle really brings out the best in the Speakerlab 7's dual 12" and 10" woofers which I didn't hear with the 2245.

I have also used a Sansui G-5000 receiver in that system which had lots of muscle, but the Concept beats it. I'm also very happy with the sensitivity on the Concept's FM tuner which I use alot on the bedroom system to listen to KPLU, the Seattle Jazz station. :music:

This thing is built like a tank. On the downside, there's no AUX ports so I'm using both the Tape1 and Tape2 for my components.
 
If you can get records cheap, great. But you really want to shoot for 50's, and 60's stuff. Now if you can find stuff like that cheap, then you are batting a thousand,
 
Congratulations! I was wondering how long before someone from AK hit on that Concept. No possible way to go wrong at $65!

Here on the other coast Concept is pretty much non-existant :no: Too bad because I'd like to have one!

Here we had a chain called Tech Hifi and if I recall correctly their house brand was called Vector Research.

Congrats. I got my 6.5 two weeks ago and it is a great performer. $65 is a deal especially with local pickup. I got mine for $56 off of you know where and was able to local pickup.
