Setton Owner's Club

I'd like to join too. Have two Setton RS-660s. Chris, you commented on one in a picture I posted in another thread. I'm tempted to redo the cabinet like you did. It looked fantasic with the real walnut veneer. Nice job. I've a question for you though. What's with the main power switch? I've seen a couple with modified or bypassed switches and heard other people comment on it too. They combined it with the speaker selection function and I wonder if that was a good idea. What's your thoughts?

Badger-

Good question.
I read somewhere that the power switch is the weak link on these units. I have an RS220 that when turned on the panel lights will flicker for a few seconds then come on. (Almost like a neon light.)

Does anyone know if these switches are still available?
Was the power switch in these particular RS units used in
other brands as well?

I am waiting for a repair manual to show so I can take my RS220 in to have it
looked at and wonder if I should start looking for another power switch.

Makes me glad they didn't use that "all in one" switch on my AS3300.

Few if any of those combined power/speaker switches were very good, they tend to arc and bun up the contacts.

By the way, we do have a (Insert Name Here) Owners Club - it's called Audio Karma.

FAQ about clubs.

How do I know if my son/daughter is in a club?

Things to look for
-Wearing a lot of one specific color, or combination of colors, i.e. blue and grey, black and yellow, using a specific logo in the signatures, etc..
-Tilting hats to the side, wearing bandanas.
-Club graffiti on notebooks, personal belongings
-Defensiveness about how they spend their time, and who they spend their time with
-Alienating themselves from family, school, church involvement.
-Collecting vintage audio brands, to the exclusion of others who do not own said brands.

Remember, clubs can be dangerous-don't lose a loved one :nono:

Monteman --

I know that the power/selector switch in the Lafayatte LR-9090 is the same as the Setton RS-660. I figure the LR-5555 and the Setton RS-440 share common parts as well. And, I'd venture that the LR-3030 and your RS-220 have much in common.

I picked up my RS-440 on eBay for about $50 almost 2 years ago. I loved its styling.

The on/off selector switch was fried. The tech (AK banished, pm for their name) suggested forgoing the "Hi filter" switch and installed a high current type On/Off in its place while maintaining the switch pushbutton action. The speaker selector continues to perform its function.

Otherwise, all other features are untouched.

He performed their usual 1st rate alignment and replaced some caps and corroded solder joints. General technical opinion was the unit is in the top 1/3 performance wise. Not bad for a $50 unit plus repairs.

While I would love to have a "purist" unit, the cost to find and install "original parts-Lafayette" is unwarranted IMHO.

I describe the sound of this unit as warm, somewhat rolled off in the highs, with a somewhat mushy bass. Just a very comfortable, non-fatiguing unit for the most part. It makes a great garage unit with a pair of Lafayette A-25 speakers!:music:

Hi Alfredo,

I'm the happy owner of an AS3300 and Nick (Monteman) emailed me the service manual. If you wish, I can emailed it to you as well. I would greatly appreciate if you could send me a copy of the manual of instruction that I'm desperately looking for!

Cheers

Hi Badger,

Quite a lucky man to have two RS-660! I just bought one last week but, you know always the same song... I do not have either the service manual or the operation manual! I would be so happy to have a copy of them. Do you have it and if so would you like to send me a copy? Thank's a lot.

Thierry

That was you who won? Congrats. At least two other AK members bid on it so I steered clear. I'm glad someone here got her.

Got #4

Just got my 4th RS-660 this week. Off of thepay for $45; I was the only bidder. It doesn't have any knobs but I wanted it for parts anyway. It's really in pretty good shape; I'll probably end up restoring it if I can find the right knobs for it. Anybody got any extras?

Request to be included here. I have a newly recapped (By Vintage Audio in Ft. Worth Tx) Settton RS220. Other than lamp flicker 10~15 seconds at start up, it sounds outstanding with my DBX DX5 CD player!

Tech thinks it to be the transformer! I have one from a RS440 coming in. There is a 440 cabinet on the Bay right now!

Try Elektrotanya. I just had a look at the RS660 service manual and it looks very good. BTW, the cover says instruction manual but it is a service manual.

Good Day,
Thanks for suggestion, however it seems like Elektrotanya has the same scan which is circulating on the web. I do not know it anybody has any better. Issue with that scan in that it looks like it missing a section. And relatively hard to read. So I wonder if anyone has an alternative scan.
