Sewer pipe speakers....down the drain!!

Hello (sob) people.
I put together a single-driver system using a pair of 3" Tang Band drivers and audiophile PVC pipe from Home Depot.
I used wool as a stuffing (thanks Grandma for the sweater).
Not much bass below 150hz....but that's why God made subwoofers isn't it?
Put on Marshall Crenshaw's 1st CD....hey it works & actually sounds good too!?
REAL LOW on the WAF though (if looks could KILL.............).
Then put on Bettye LaVette.....nice!!
That is until the right speaker started to sound like a chain saw!!!???
DAMM!!
DAMM!!
DAMM!!
Lesson learned?
More self-control on the volume knob.
These drivers are NOT designed as Woodstock-speakers.
I will pick up another driver from PE....now that I've been PROPERLY HUMBLED!!

If that's similar to my audio faucets then I would highly recommend painting. Mine are what I call "OBU", Operational, But Ugly. I know a guy who got some textured stuff and painted some like snakes. Pretty cool.

As for the blowup...you're right, they won't take much juice. Use them nearfield. I had mine about 4' away from me when they sounded their best. It also probably wouldn't hurt to put some bass blocker caps on to save a little anxiety. Somewhere around 150uF would get you a 6dB rolloff starting about 150Hz and might save the driver next time.

You also might try using the imported German PVC. I gives a warmer sound and helps damp the driver for a little more power handling.

Ok, that last one is a joke but you knew that. Right? ;)

And for Similost, if he built them like mine then they look like this.

ummm.. OK.. they look interesting, but I still have to ask why? Wouldn't a small bookshelf speaker sound better? Or am I missing something here?

And I counter...why not? ;)

The reason is that it's the cheapest, easiest way to make a transmission line. Mine were a continuation of a different project. I started off doing a small desktop type speaker using all elbows for a coiled spring type appearance in a transmission line design. When I listened to them I figured I could get more bass (sic) with a longer line and decided it was easier to use a straight piece of pipe for experimentation purposes. When I got them to sound decent I left them. Mine were about the right height to stand up behind the desk (a corner desk) and put the speakers beside the computer monitor. Since then my wife appropriated that desk to take to her office so the speakers are idle in the garage right now.

edit: oh yeah, that that "sound better" is subjective. I love TLs.

Bettye LaVette? Crenshaw? You must be a Detroiter. I love low-buck build-ups! If you dig Bettye LaVette, check out Nathaniel Mayer-Detroit guy with a lot of local musicians on his stuff.:thmbsp:

OH MY GOD!!!
It WAS NOT the Speakers!!!
It was the RIGHT CHANNEL of my Marantz 27 that went south (sob - sob)!?
I'm playing the SEWER SPEAKERS....right now...on an Onkyo A/V receiver.
As I said before....I'm using a $20 XBox sub with a $45 Dayton amp, crossed over at 150hz/12db.
Damm, these sound nice!!
Paint them black!!!???
You think I want my wife to actually like them....and worse yet....USE THEM!?

P.S. Detroit music rules!!

Steve

I've been thinking about trying something like this, with the PVC cut and jointed to form a sort of spiral. I think it might resonate, though.

Damn man, thats really shi............

I've looked at these a lot, there are a few sites devoted to them under a "full range driver" google search. Question for Ray: Sound-wise, do these differ greatly from a TQWT wooden box with the same driver? Any issues with the materials regarding sound quality/noise?

What is audiophile PVC pipe from Home Depot? :D
That's a typo, you can't get audiophile-grade PVC from Home Depot... :smoke:

Hey, I like what you did with those, Mr. Hardy... They'll fit right in if you have a TIKI theme room. :thmbsp: :D
