Sherwood S-8900 -- comments or opinions?

Hi Robie!
Yea, it is so sad that after all these years, Geocities decided to pull the plug. A lot of web sites have been removed & some we will never see the wonderful info again unless it has been saved.

I spent the better part of the weekend copying files & setting up my over 90 web pages to the new yahoo small business hosting program. Waiting for my domain name to become active & when it does, like I stated in the thread in the General Off forum, I will re-create some of the Sherwood pages as a tribute to the guy.

I apologize for hijacking this thread & thanks Robie for the encouragement in hopes I get another Sherwood.

Yeah, and my apologies for thread hijack too. You could do a whole lot worse than a S-8900. Very nice receiver that they'll have to pry out of my cold, dead..... but I digress.

Very well made and I think they weigh well over 30 lbs.

Hi all - i have a sherwood s-9400 - any thoughts on this model?? it is currently being repaired, can't wait to get it back!

Sorry, quad, not familiar with the 9400 but the 9500 looks pretty nice as seen on a few of the "freland yahoo cities" link info pages I successfully managed to save. However, I didn't manage to save the product list (with dates of production and power ratings).

Maybe Rome still has it.

Hi Robie & other interested Sherwood addicts meet me in my Geocities thread in the General Off forum to discuss further topics as to give this thread it's duely respect.

Sorry for hijacking again..

I have an s9910 that I really like. Sounds great and in minty condition well except for the phono section that has since died but I'll get it fixed eventually it's a keeper.

I have pretty much every USA made vintage Sherwood amp and tuner in my collection. I am in the queue waiting for EchoWars to go over my SEL-400 which is Sherwood's self designated TOTL SS amp. I am also waiting on a S-5000 rebuild which should be an interesting contrast. My current S-8900A is a so-so performer which I suspect would greatly improve with a recap.

I'm a fan of Sherwood. I am using a S3300 SS FM tuner and S9500c integrated amp on my Bozak Symphonys and am not missing any of the larger components I used to run on them. I have a SEL-200 receiver whose tuner is based on the S3300 and though it has high dc output voltage and needs the output caps replaced, it it fantastic sounding as is. I can not wait to have it gone through one of these days. If anything can compete with the early Sonys I have, I suspect it will be the SEL-200.

I luckily stumbled into a free mint 8900A- and it is one dangerous unit-I will post pics when I can. A real ****-kicker.Evidently there is a way to quad it with an adaotor? I don't know it well enough yet. Any advice deeply appreciated - Dave-all the best

I've had a 8900a for years. I stopped working a couple of years ago but i just can't get myself to let it go. And every time I read a thread like this I consider fixing it. Bare wire from the tuner light bulb touched the metal rim and it went up in smoke. I could find another used one for probably less that the repair cost!

i have an 8900 with a few problums im trying to figure out....constant hum and about quarter volume im getting very loud flutter and extreme hum...also ive noticed even after power switch is turned off the meter bulb has some power still going to it....a leak of some sort im sure. any ideas out there .........

I have a 8900. I love it. I have soo many other amps and receivers I'll sell it eventually. I believe it's the last model made in Chicago.

The Sherwood brand was a cut above in it's hay day. In my area... New Haven CT. they were sold by high end dealers as a lower cost option to Mcintosh. I'm talking mid 60' to mid 70's.
