Shibata on an M91ED? Why not!

Here's where I've been getting mine. He probably has less than a handful left, if that, but for his current price of $18 + $4 shipping, you can't beat www.thevoiceofmusic.com on the 614-DQ. Might as well clean him out. Be gentle.

John, I'll have to look (= squint) at some of the other vendors' photos. I would expect a JICO to be different, but you've seen four different styles of canti? Egad.

Well, my eyes suck too, Walt. ;)

Gary is a good egg.
He is, and at tVOM, he's the ONLY egg. A very brave egg, I'd say. Until very recently the price was $12 + ship. Twelve bucks! So I know he's running very low on the 614-DairyQueen.

As for the different cantis, I'd stay with the spatula style.

As for eyes, heck yes. A couple of us have been giggled at for this failing. When the giggler one day becomess the giggled, let's hope he bears it with good grace.

I will say from personal experience, the Excel cartridge is a very nice sounding cartridge and with the ability to get a high quality stylus for relatively cheap price, lol it's quite the bargain. I am sure some may not like us discussing it in too much detail.

Very likely. Because: internet. And you're lucky to live in a country that seems to have plenty of Excels. I got my ES-70S from England. I was surprised the styli were available here in the US.

That may be true but, buying bulk is not an option, haha. But, they make great high quality budget cartridges. I stumbled upon them purely by accident as I got one with a broken stylus, it's only after the potential ability of a higher end stylus that I kept it.

It does have a bit of roll off in the treble but, it's a pleasant sounding cartridge. Can't give a better detail about it's sound characteristic as the table that has it isn't connected to anything.

Believe it or not, buying ES-70E bodies in bulk (lots of 10) is an option, thanks to a Canadian eBay seller. They sell complete ES-70E cartridges in bulk, too.

Oh! I forgot to warn you all. You may run across an Excel ES-28, which looks almost exactly like an ES-70 with a red stylus. It's a completely different (= incompatible) cart: moving-iron, with very high inductance (around 1100mH), sort of a Japanese version of a Stanton 680. Nice cart, just don't confuse it with the ES-70. UPDATE: the Astatic NMR elliptical sounds rilly-good.

I know, but you gave me the perfect opening to mention the unexpected little bulk buys available.

By the way, if anyone has any brochures, owner's booklets, anything about the Excels, please photograph or scan them and post them here on AK.

UPDATE: I bought one of the needledaddy (Sanyo) styli. Let's see how that one works.

Sorry guys, it's the small shank style. We are talking about the M24H stylus, right? I have one right here. Same size as this V15VMR stylus shank. Fits in an M95, just a little loose. Doesn't mean you can't use it.

Yes, tried it again. You are correct Wualta!

You guys, after being around awhile and witnessing Walt establish facts regarding cartridges and styli, will discover that it is almost impossible to trip him up either intentionally or unintentionally.

:D

OK, I have a question. Isn't the body of that cartridge the same as the one on the now (in)famously called "Red Ed" cartridge?

Doug

No, but I think both were made by Nagaoka. Right now that's just a hunch, one of those "operating hypotheses".

And thanks to Doug G. for the very kind words. Still, given enough rope, I will eventually both trip myself up and hang myself. You just wait.

Walt, Let us know your opinion of the Sanyo stylus. Inquiring minds want to know. :scratch2:

How about this...

First, my apologies to wualta for posting this. It's not meant as a hijack but more so since this thread is about experimentation....a Sumiko Oyster with a Shure N24H parabolic
Very tasty, very dynamic. A little raspy but that just might that it isn't dialed in all the way. Man this is fun :D

Not a problem, in fact right on topic, far's I'm concerned. What's the consensus on the "Sumiko" (who I'm sure didn't make the cartridge)? Azden?

"Raspy"? That doesn't sound good. Is it peaky in the treble?

Anyway, having fun is precisely the point. As for the Sanyo/EVG "614-DQ", always willing to take one for the team, as long as it's cheap. Couldn't tell from ND's eBay photo, even using Power Squint, whether it's a typical spatular Nagaoka canti. It may be a JICO, which will be equally interesting to investigate.

I have the EVG 614Q stylus and it sounds mighty fine to me. I've also had several other styli that looked similar to the EVG colour but I have no idea of the manufacturer and they sounded a like.

May I ask what exactly you hope to accomplish? Even if the transplant is successful, the cartridge is only rated at 20-20000 frequency response. A shibata can double that (or better) as it's specifically designed for CD4 ...

As I understand it, the goal is to have some fun through experimentation plus glean a bit of knowledge. Besides it's all about how it sounds, not about specs.

Thanks Walt. Raspy went away with a proper alignment and a slight change in VTA (thicker mat) . I really like how this combo sounds. Killer dynamics.

In an earlier post I mentioned that my eyes suck but I didn't mention my ears. ;) I can't hear 20Hz or 20kHz. Frankly neither can most of us. Why would I care if my cartridge could better either of those numbers? What I want is detail and a pleasing response curve within my audible range.
