Short C-70 question

My turntable is connected to the C-70 via the MC Direct input. If I use one of the short circuit plugs that came with my C-4 in the alternative inputs Phono 1 or 2, it will mute the signal completely. Is this normal?

What is the front panel MM selector set to? MC Amp?
At least based on the schematic, if the MM selector switch is set to MC Amp, and Phono selector switch set to Phono1 or Phono2, then shorting Phono1 or Phono 2 respectively, will short the MC Direct input as well. That is, With MM selector at MC Amp and Phono switch set to Phono1, do not short Phono1 even if you’re using MC Direct. The same for Phono2.


I don’t have a C-70 so someone might have seen this first hand and suggest corrections if needed.

The phono input selector is also switching after the equalizer section. So, if I want to listen to my MC cart, even if it is connected to the MC Direct input I have to set the input selector to MC.

According to the user manual, direct phono terminals and 1,2 terminals cannot be used at the same time. So I think it nothing is wrong with my C-70.

The Phono input selector works only on Phono1 and Phono2 … not Disc Direct. When using Disc Direct, the selection is made by the round MM switch, the Phono switch has no effect.
There is nothing wrong with your C-70 … leave it alone and enjoy the music.

EDIT: I don’t think you need to use short plugs or Yamaha would have provided them. Again, those with C-70 experience can chime in.

In some pictures of the backside of the C-70 there are some kind of plugs in phono 1&2. I suppose it must be simple dust caps.
