Show us your DIY speaker projects!

Hey P, those look great....I mean the finished speakers. What is a BSC circuit? From all the pics they look like just a bass reflex box. Is that right? How is the bass?

Just starting on mine today and will post pix.

Thanks. BSC is a baffle step compensation circuit which in a nutshell can cure driver warts. Lots more to it than that and there are many references on the subject but I'm not smart enough to give a better explanation.

Mass loading I assume refers to the mass of poly-fill contained in the sleeve which loads the space from the driver to just above the port. The rest is pretty much like a bass reflex. The bass is plentiful compared to most full range single drivers. I do use two OB subs cause I have them and they do add some fullness.

BSC cigar boxes ( the brand is Chillin Moose ). Don't know if any of you guys have tried those cigars but the box smells great.

Thanks Dave. I am still very much into OB speakers and the Zenith/H-frames are on the opposite side of my room. I think I like the fact that the Lowthers in MLTL's are more refined and less in-your-face than they were in OB's but their raw unadulterated jump factor is also something I miss. Less fatiguing in the MLTL's with great pin point imaging but lacks the huge airy OB soundstage. The MLTL's take up less floor space but weigh a ton and are more difficult to move. They sound different and for me that's important. I enjoy variety and would rather not be married to one system that always sounds the same, regardless of how good it may sound.

bwL0m+wOSRS8Q6WGanUKxQ.jpg Two sounded fantastic so I kinda figured 4 would sound better......
4 Mackie C200's on top. Really throws Bass down the road........It really gets out of hand this.....hobby.

Yep, I built the 4 subs. To a Design over at AVS. Started as a discussion with my Son about speakers and frequency response, he discovered very few go down to 20hz, made the statement that it was impossible. I said nothing is impossible. Just often improbable.
When he next came home from College, i took him out into the garage........ they go to around 15hz. Easily. Ported tapped horns. Unfolded would be 26 1/2 ft long.
Bear in mind he was given the Hi Fi bug at a very early age, with his own stereo(s) in increments.
Currently waiting to go to his new home is his C65/M65 combo, Tuner, Twin Cassette, etc.

I wanted to build a pair of DIY speakers but dnot have the woodworking tools or skills. I originally settled on Paul Carmody''s Classix II and purchased the tweeters and mid woofers, then changed my mind to the Classix 2.5. I wanted floorstanders with more bass and no sub woofer. I bought a pair of Polk R50 speakers, removed the Polk speakers and crossovers. I used a hole saw to make the hole for the tweeter larger so the tweeter could be mounted. The mid woofer fits perfectly. I had to put one of the Polk mid woofers back in the bottom position but will eventually replace them with Dayton DC160's. I built the crossovers on top of each speaker, very convenient and I like the look. These speakers are great for the classic rock that I listen to.

Hello,

Back in 1986 I bought a pair of Magnat All Ribbon 6 speakers. Over the years a cat destroyed the covers, a child stinged a tweeter and a candle dripped over a woofer and so on. So I had to do quite some repairing, as well as a visual update. That is not easy but I wanted to, because I'm attached to these speakers, they are an important part of my life, music gets me through all kinds of life's events and phases.
Both boxes got new crossovers by Dayton Audio, and one speaker got a new tweeter by Prestige, which didn't fit, and gave me headaches. I found a solution, it got a car grill. Both woofers got woofer protectors, so my cat wont damage them. They are not identical anymore, but I don't mind. Anyway, with all the mutations, I thought this is a project :) In the meantime the Magnats are accompanied by 2 TMA 20 satellite speakers. These are great with midrange. I'm superhappy with my vintage sound.

I've worked on this pair of speakers for a long time, but finally got it right (to me). The woofer is a Goldwood 6.5" GW-6PC-8, the tweeter is a SEAS H086 (4 ohm) crossed over at 3500 hz using a 12db per octave Butterworth. The woofer has no network, but rolls off nicely and rapidly at around 3500 hz.

The tweeter has a resistive L-pad to reduce the output by 5db. The photos show an adjustable L-pad, but that has been removed. The speaker has a rear port. At approximately 1/2 meter, the 2 drivers sound like a single sound source. The Goldwood is built really well and produces amazing results for such a smallish cabinet (.6 cu. ft.). The speaker's primary duties are in the garage micro system powered by a S.M.S.L SA-98e class D amp with 160 watts RMS per channel (4 ohms). Sources are the Sony HDFM tuner XDR-F1HD, and a S.M.S.L jump drive player.

Also have a Denon RDS tuner (the Technics is gone), and a cheapie RCA 4 input switcher from Menards.

I built these Klipsch inspired Belle clones a couple years ago and finished them right at Christmas 2017. I was only able to listen to them until mid March 2018 as we bought land, listed our house and sold it in 48 hours, then spent a year building a new house. They were stored at my best friends house upstairs from March '18 till June '19 so even now, there hasn't been a ton of listening time. They do sound great in their new resting place running off an Onkyo Reference stack o' gear. Still need to get the bass bin grills done one of these days. Oh well...

Old house...
