Audio Control had some good stuff. I had a bunch of C101s not too long ago. Nothing on my main rig anymore, trying to keep that one simple and clean. On my other rig, I have an Ashly PQX 572 parametric eq.

Do the tone controls on my old Marantz count, it's got a full three bands!
I'm mostly a "leave it flat" kind of listener, though I like having those tone controls because here and there (but very rarely, I must admit), I'm listening to something where I'm inclined to make an adjustment.

I think to count as a true equalizer it needs to be a complete separate component with at least seven bands per channel

But what about that Schiit thing that has just 4 bands? Folks talk of that thing as an "equalizer.." I was really just kidding though as I realize that bass, midrange and treble controls aren't quite enough to be considered and equalizer, though I'm fine with just that level of adjustment.

And I was going to post a full frontal of my MiniDSP Flex Eight just for kicks…
It’s front end is a digital eq though, with the choice of 10 PEQ points or I cannot remember how many FIR filters per channel. Modern times.

With the thought that went into the Audio Control 520, with 5-bands, three in the critical bass region (30-60-120Hz) plus a midrange band (1kHz) and a very high frequency band (15.5kHz) the requirement of 7-bands leaves this unit out. But it is arguably a better eq for most to get proper sound from regular stereos.

I had a lot of time to kill and went whole hog on DSP. Got a copy of REW (free!) spectrum analysis software and a calibrated mike, using that to voice the room to maybe a gazillion frequencies. Did that for each channel, averaged those, applied a room curve, and exported the results to jRiver's "convolution kernel".

* That takes care of digital sources. Analog still gets some love with a Technics SH9010 parametric eq. I just highlighted the "big lumps" in REW's results, targeted those on the PEQ, and tweaked those to my liking. Not perfect like the DSP, but way better than trying to guess.

Played around some with the MiniDSP but decided on full digital instead. Still impressive from the looks of things, but I lost it trying to apply a room curve ... and they hadn't updated to ISO2003 ... and I already had the REW toys I'd been wanting to play with anyways. <G>

I like the sound of the MiniDSP. It’s just inconvenient to configure. With the dbx, I have a web interface for adjustments and preset recall. It’s a really powerful tool that does not impact the sound much at all.Played around some with the MiniDSP but decided on full digital instead. Still impressive from the looks of things, but I lost it trying to apply a room curve ... and they hadn't updated to ISO2003 ... and I already had the REW toys I'd been wanting to play with anyways. <G>

The White is a lovely sounding EQ, it a bear to configure. It’s a legacy unit from my live sound days, as are the Yamahas. I never found most manual, slider graphic EQs to help the sound much. It seemed to me to be more about fixing the interface between the speaker and the room if the acoustics could not be adjusted. I’m partial to parametric eqs. 8 bands, center frequency where you want, variable Q and I’m in tweaked heaven.

I have two program Equalizers now. SAE and Rane for the stereo system. The room EQ is a Mcintosh MQ 107 for the XRT 28 speakers. The 7.0 HT system has 3 Crown EQ-2. But I only use 5 channels. There is a small Audio Control for the side speakers. The MX 151 has the built in Room perfect system by Lyngdorf, but I just don't quite care for what he considers to be the ideal response curve. I prefer a modified B curve that Roger Russell recommends for the front speakers and for the stereo system. The rear speakers something similar to the THX small room X curve for the rear speakers.
