1 of the nicest portables I ever owned was a Sony am-fm. From the late '60s or early '70s it had an FET front end when more stereo receivers were still transitioning to them, a mpx output, an aux input and a tape out. I also had the mpx adaptor and tried it as a tuner into my stereo and it knocked off almost everything I had in inventory for sensitivity and as a tuner the sound was really decent. As a standalone stereo (the mpx had a 2nd amp and speaker with 2nd aux in and tape out) it was so-so but I suspect it would do better then most of these micro staereos I see around. Wonder what ever happended to it. Some relative or friend must have gotten it as a gift years ago. Wish I remembered the model numbers.

I'm really a fan of Yamaha when it comes to amps ( sorry), but I do think the tuners are very under- appreciated.

Brian, you seem to be the web reference for the 6060F. Couple of quick questions if you don't mind. Does it have pre-out/amp-in jumpers, what inputs and any idea of the output? Am I correct in assuming it uses FETs?

the best thing about a sony ss-g7 is the alnico speaker try it with a good tube amp there is only musik no limits i owned a ns1000 also a supherb speaker but the sony is better
but every audiophile will not buy old sonyspeaker they don´t now what they are missing
the same thing with v-fet
it´s old but i like it!

junkaudio - If you can get a more detailed pic of your tuner insides and post it, I, for one, would like to see. I didn't realize that this tuner had all of that shielding.

Also, if you could post a couple of pic's of your speakers, we would really like to see them, as well. With grills off.

I should update the post soon with recent findings related to the manufacturing of them G7s - and, for once, manufacturing really fits!

The G7 proved to be an excellent seller in Japan even if not as much as the NS-1000 (probably a world record that one) - partly because it wasn't on sale as long as the 1000 (close though), and partly because it is written Sony on it

Amazing, the number/amount of high-end products that Sony once made. Just finished reading an article in BW about them laying off 10,000 people world-wide. They are having a terrible time competing (like GM and Ford and other old-line companies in the U.S.) as ~70% of their production is located in high-cost countries (Japan 40%, U.S. 20% and Europe 10%). So this is probably the start of something even worse for their employees. Too bad.

the st-a7 tuner is an overkill sonicly and builtquality ebaypurchase for 150 bucks this week
to axel: you may also update the sony ta-fb page because it has 12 v-fets in
total (6 per chanel) i can prove with photos same as your tan-7b

Sadly, This is my only Sony left. This ST 5950 SD needs a good cleaning and a couple of dial lamps. The end panels are bad (delaminating) but I got some Corian material that will make for a nicely finished end cap.

She's a 5-ganger and sounds very sweet despite needing a facelift.

They still do but even more discreetely than before but completely digital-oriented (ie. multi-channel, sound-fields and SACD) and strictly mega-buck, too. Just managed to locate a japanese catalog of Sony's current audio lineup and "lineup" is even too big a word - only a handful of units.

you're right - 6 pairs of complementary V-Fets in the F7(B), with only the four transformers downscaled to two and 4x 15,000uF instead of the 4x 22,000uF of the N7(B)... my! the things I let go sometimes

Own a couple of broken units and you too can be a web reference. Absolon, the unit is rated at 45 watts rms @ 8 ohms, does not have preamp outputs and has 62 trasistors including 2 FETs in the tuner. If memory serves me I think there are 2 others here using 6060s and like them. How much do I like mine, well I notice that when I am working I almost always switch (with the Bozak Symphonys) it on rather than the Mc/Philips/Wharfedale system that is in the same room. Must say something.

wait - in the TA-N7, there are 6 plates/heatsinks holding each two compl. V-Fets (2SK60/2SJ18) ; in the TA-F7, there are 4 plates/heatsinks holding three TO-3 transistors each.
This would mean that, in the F7, 4 pairs of compl. V-Fets would be "split" onto different boards with the attendant thermal detectors split as well? Does it seem logical?

Wouldn't the third TO-3 in each of the F7 heatsink be the cascoded bipolar? Wouldn't that be more logical?
As I do not own the F7 manual (can't have everything) could you check this for us junkaudio?

i also don`t have an service manual but here are 3 transformers (one toridial is mountet upside down and 6 v-fets per channel on the ta-fb
bias and dcoffset are fine and so is the sound
not bad for a 30 year old unit!

if they are V-Fets, then the setup would be, vertically:
