I can only afford so much largesse for a new graduate. If he had driven up and back I was going to give him a pair of EPI 120s that merrylander has refurb'd for me. And, you have a PM.

Glenn, I never really put 2+2 together, but you're right, it was your tuner. Once I had my eye on the TAF333ESL, Mike mentioned that he had the matching tuner and held it for me. After that, we started talking about fixing it up and making it optimized for suburban reception. Its not a DX'er, but it sure does well in Atlanta.
1st Post...so I apologize in advance, but I just wanted to tell "someone". Back in the mid 70's I worked summers at Sony Canada. I purchased a system at employee cost which included a STR 7800 and a set of G5's (I was 16). I paid, if my memory serves me well, $475 for the 7800. During the next 10 years, my friends surpassed me in audio knowledge and budget. Yet every time I raced over to hear their new "top of the line" components, I left disappointed. My 60 lb 7800 with the 80 lb each G5's and a clean source sounded better! Well only recently have I returned to my music routes and my vintage system, intact and still blowing everything out of the water! It was your site that informed me why the 7800 outperforms the masses. Thanks for that. I have added a number of vintage gems including a Mac 1500 (wife's) and a pair of Klipch corner monsters (ouch!...talk about getting it right in 1960!) and a second STR7800! I just have a love affair with the vintage equipment...it talks to me. Well I appreciate your time reading my "story" and knowing others share my passion.

Welcome to the group. A 1500 is rather unique and coupling it with a set of K'horns should make for a dynamite system. How is the preamp noise on the 1500? The preamp in the later 1700 actually is better than I'd have expected given its generation in the SS life span and Mc's less than steller 1st gen preamps from that period, the C24 and 26. 1 of my favorite receivers of all time is the 1700. The 1500 I understand is even better but, alas I've never had my hands on 1 long enough to do any in-depth listening. The K'horns, well, speak for themselves - about as good as it gets int eh right environment and with the right electronics upstream.
The 7800 has a good following here and seems to be universally loved by owners. As for friends passing you by in audio knowledge, it is not whether someone can recite every spec of every unit made but whether a person can determine which system comes closer to a live presentation. The weakness is that too many have little life around live acoustical music any longer.

Here is a shot of my TA-N77ES which I will have July 10th and I can't wait! She's a beauty and will see action in my main system.

Thanks Brian. The kicker is that my wife got the Mac as a gift from a friend as a quick fix to a sudden (divorce) no music problem. She had acquired a new "mini system' and was ready to toss it along when I came into the picture. I told her if the Mac goes...so do I! Well my second STR7800 arrived today, pristine condition and sounds great! Not as warm as STR7800 #1, but let’s give it some time. Yamaha B-2, what a great offer for the pic's! I really appreciate the consideration. Be warned all who pass here...my mandate is to acquire all the 70's Monster receivers...your input on the list is greatly appreciated, especially the lesser known gems. Thanks for the warm welcome.

Thanks Fella's! But the truth be known, "getting" my wife was the real prize. Frankly, after seeing the Mac I figured the guy may have had other designs in mind, like my soon-to-be proposed to wife! With the Mac in play, I had to pull the trigger fast! All attempts at humor aside, I can't consider the Mac as my deal since I did not go out and acquire it. However, the years only half over and perhaps I may have that "award" yet. Ciao fella’s, and thanks again for the warm welcome.
I tell ya boys, if you ever have a chance to hear a TA-N77ES it will make a believer out of you. This is my first Sony amp and it is for real.
I keep saying i'm going to post some nudies. I'm rearranging the racks tomorrow so I will snap some then. At around 60lbs it is an amp that you don't want to move around all that often. It has gobs of power and an absolutely superb bottom end.
