*Silliness* Most ridiculous or insane home speaker stacks...

We all sometimes do our "mad scientist" experiments- trying to stack various speakers together to get "better" performance. Sometimes, these can get a bit out-of-hand- to an extent to where it's really fun, or sometimes just funny. Here's a thread, so any one of you that's done this, can post up a description, and hopefully a picture, of you own ridiculous speaker stacks. I'll start it here:

JBL L100 "Line Array"! :D

Three pairs of JBL L100s, all wired in parallel, running from a single NAD C320 integrated amp. The L100, with DC resistance of about 4.6 ohms or so each, is realistically about a 6 ohm load- so that was running that C320 at TWO OHMS per channel. The C320 proceeded to just laugh at the low impedance- and made it nearly pants-shaking-ly loud in that room, with no ill effects on the amp or the speakers. That was a whole lot of fun to play with for a few hours, before we had to take it all apart and put our sound room back together in a "normal" form...

Regards,
Gordon.

Gordon,
I often wonder why more people don't do what you did with those JBLs or with other two or three way speakers.

Our ears are separated from each other on the horizontal plane. The brain uses the very slight time delay that sound waves exhibit when sounds are horizontally off to one side or the other, to locate the position of the source of the sound. This is why the best speakers generally have their drivers a lined up in the vertical plane. The vertical driver arrangement gives the best chance for our brain to integrate the output of the separate drivers as if it came from the same location.

4_2_7,
Do you play the 2 pairs of MLs and the JBLs simultaneously? Just trying to clarify your post. I guess that you mean the 2 pairs of MLs are being played simultaneously.

Well, I know someone who used stacked advents (3 for each channel). He said the problem was that the ohm load is 2 ohms or less so you need a REALLY STOUT AMP.

He shoulda' just added two more and done a series/parallel setup.

Not normally, those photos were when I got my second pair of Sequels and playing around with the system speaker set up. For the sake of the thread I have had everything on together along with a 1200 watt powered 18" Velodyne sub. At this point I don't have both MLs in the system anymore.

My McIntosh C100 preamp has 3 outputs, Main (on all the time) plus 1&2 that are selected by a switch. Al three outputs also have RCA and XLR connections, so you can use both at the same time if you want 6 outputs to control up to 6 power amps.

So normal setup regardless of speakers or power amps

Main Output <sub selected by turning it on or not and can be use with any of the 3 power amp/speaker sets.

Main output < Power amp/speaker set, selected by turning it on or not

Output #1 Power amp/speaker set, leave on, selected by turning on zone #1

Output #2 Power amp/speaker set, leave on, selected by turning on zone #2

So I have different options to select between Tube or SS amps, what speakers I want to use, does it need more bass or not and add sub. All dependent on my mood, time of day and what kind of music I'm listening to. Oh and on really hot days I can skip using my tubes and just listen to SS.

As of last weekend I got some new amps, VAC Vintage High Power Mk II Monophonic Power Amplifier so my system looks like this now, I'm sure things will change as they always do.

The amps are vary rare

Don't know if I could ever find more pairs of L212s - but its something to aspire to!
I only have 1 pair, and these are not my stacks -
but I am inspired by this stack posted by Scott Tex in 2014
I gather he ebayed them away in 2015, and is no longer a member here ...

This is great and I cant wait to show my cousin, he told me a story about stacking 6 pr of L100s with 6 sansui amps, in the 70s while in the service in England. He stayed on a farm eventually and 6 of his friends all had a pr of l100s , they had a big barn party one weekend, and decided to build a frankenstien sound system, he said the farmer came in yelling after a while ,swinging his arms saying "TURN IT DOWN!!! I CANT EVEN HEAR IF THE MILK PUMP IS RUNNING IN THE MILKHOUSE!!!!. lol

I saw a pair of stacked Cerwin-Vega D-9 on the local CL a few years ago. They were bolted together and had custom grill covers. I wish I had kept the picture....

Can't really stack floor-standers on top of each other but I tried to keep them in an arrangement where their tweeters were reasonably close to each other, so that it sounds decent when I do run them all together. I listen to the speakers one pair at a time or in various combinations depending on the goals of my listening session.

The L150s are my main speakers because between the 033 tweeter and the passive radiator, it gives the treble and bass a very nice soft quality to it that the other two don't have. They are very easy speakers to listen to and I can listen to them all day long.

The L100Ts (with T3 crossovers) are my loudest speakers, with the 2214H woofer having twice the power handling of the 128H woofers in the other two speakers. I like the way they sound and they match well with the L150s when they are both run together, but they are still my 2nd choice for long listening sessions (L150 being the first).

The 4412 Speakers are my least used, because of how neutral they are, but sometimes that is what I need or want and in that case they really come into play. They also match well enough with the others when all 3 are run at the same time (usually party time).

Also run a pair of L5s but they are being tested in my HT at the moment.

I miss the early years(10+ years old) of my audio adventures when I would wire up every speaker in the house to one unit. A SPST house switch would also be used to provide wizard like entertainment for visiting friends. Awesome thread!!

Here is a pair of stacked Altec Model 19's that I had set up for a couple of days. To much speaker for the room :)

Yowza!

I sold my K-Horns to a guy who was planning to stack them on top of another pair, similar to this. I asked him to send me pictures, but I never heard from him again.

There is an old thread here about 6-7 years ago where they were connecting 10 pair of Advents, I think. Then another for about 20 sets of Minimus 7's.

Mad scientists at work. :music:

The Minimus 7's would actually make a pretty good line array. Seems I remember someone who wanted to collect 20 pairs and remount the drivers in new line array cabinets. I don't know if that one counts here though.
