Skating rink speakers... VOTT?

Plywood. More pics coming... on this first pair, on of the tweeters sounds very harsh. Should I look at the crossover or something else? I can at least swap crossovers and see if the harshness follows it.

Do you have the 501 or 801 xovers? The 501 uses two 28uf caps each. The 801 uses two 18uf caps each. I used Jantzen cross caps in my 801's.
The speakers are a bit mid-forward. I would think a recap of the xover would get rid of some of the harshness. I use an EQ on mine to further clean it up.
Do you know if the diaphragms are Altec or replacement? The non-original diaphragms are usually pretty harsh compared to the originals

I'll dig into them more and see which crossovers and diaphragms are here.

I used the Jantzen 18uf caps in my 801 xovers but they also have some nice Genteq motor run oil caps on ebay for 8 bucks each. If you don't mind mounting them externally

Is that an audio grade wire nut? ;)

Hard to say for sure if the cabinets are factory or not. They are surely faithful to the design, however. It would be nice to find an Altec stamp in there somewhere.

Woofer is date coded 1972, that appears about right for the period of the cabinet as well. You can see where the one remaining removable panel was once screwed down along it's long edge. This tells me these cabinets originally had a horizontal port with upper and lower removable panels, all correct for the period and design.

Looking towards the inside front baffle. This one has some of the grille clothe staples from behind. The other only had it stapled at the top and bottom behind those trim pieces.
