I had a first year model Taurus. Very nice car. I remember seeing Robocop and thinking..."that's my car!"
It served us pretty well, until 140k miles when the transmission failed ( like all Fords ).
The Tortise transmission was not great. Lots of them got junked when the second one died. Or sometimes the first one, depending on the condition of the rest of it. I maybe don't hate Ford transmissions as much as many, but I have a very high mileage AOD and I refuse to say anything negative about Henry's transmissions if only because I don't want to deal with it. 236k miles later it still has it's original 4 gears and I'd like for that to remain the case as long as possible.
Pacer and Pinto in the same thread...That brings us to Scott, high school buddy.
He had a Pinto turned left off Clayton Road in Frontenac, MO and hit the curb of the median causing a flat tire. Swapped tires drove to the Lincoln Mercury dealer and traded it in for a...Bobcat.
Years later when the Jeep got wrecked he bought a Pacer. Had the car a couple months but never had any power. Took it to the dealer when the first Jeep Golden Eagles were coming out. He and his wife at the dealer, she talks to the service manager finding out that going over a speed bump had crushed an exhaust pipe keeping the engine for working properly. Gretchen finds Scott in a salesman's office and asks what he is doing...I'm buying the Jeep. One of the first in the St Louis area.
Guy didn't know and still doesn't know or care about cars.
My older brother taught me to drive.. 1952 chevy truck.. inline 6, 3 on the tree, 6v electrical system(with a generator, not an alternator)..
Everytime I stalled it, I got out to push start it.. it didn't take long to learn.. (the hard way)
First vehicle I ever drove when I was 12 was a 1951 chevy 3/4 ton truck in the hay field when we were putting up hay ,would leave the choke 1/2 out in creeper gear didn’t need to give it gas !
