It is absolutely beyond me, why ANY person would just throw the tiniest bit of garbage on the ground. WTF!!!!!
I learned as a kid not to do that.
Every piece of trash/plastic that is laying on the ground eventually ends up in the ocean. I saw a video on YT once where somewhere in Asia or Indonesia people were trying to pick out returneable plasic bottles from a literal river of plastic trash. That is so ****ed up.

I live 1000 feet from the Pacific Ocean -- as t he crow flies....
It is so sad to see the road to the beach -- littered with Burger King, Mcdonalds and thus disregard for our earth -- simply stated people do not give a ****....

I tell everyone to walk to the beach and look left , then right --- and as far as you can see, realize how SMALL --- YOU really are.

It’s unfortunate that the vessel that collected the debris can only grab 12-20k lbs at a time.
I don’t think most of that trash in the ocean is from careless litterers. I suspect a big portion of it is from tsunamis, floods, shipping accidents, etc, and not just garbage thrown on the ground. I don’t believe every piece of trash tossed on the ground will find its way to the ocean either. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not “pro littering”, but people are not intentionally at fault for everything. I have seen the debris scattered in hurricanes here that dwarfs actual litter, and I have seen the monumental efforts to clean it up. Maybe I have a little more faith in fellow humans.

Also, while "litter" is unsightly to humans, it is not bad for the environment. I am thinking about the fast food cardboard containers and burger wraps. They will go away- they just look bad... to us. Animals do not care about the aesthetic of this problem.
What I do have issue with is the stuff that is harmful to environment or its citizenry (human, flora or fauna). Here, I am considering what this thread was predicated on, along with liquid litter from oil tankers, pipelines, platforms as well.

I live on a lake in Georgia. For the most part it’s very nice, with just a couple of exceptions.
1. Total pigs that think the lake is their personal garbage can.
2. Wake boats that think buzzing within 50 feet of a dock doesn’t do any harm.
Both types of people are jerks IMHO.
Great to see a start in the cleanup.
The better solution, IMHO, is long term education of the younger generations. We did it, for the most part with cigarettes, we can do it about trash.

Cruise Ships were known to dump their trash in the oceans and are allowed to dump billions of gallons of raw sewerage into the oceans. That can't be good.
Plus all the storm drains in cities near the water just drain right into the ocean.
Boston Harbor was disgusting when I was a kid, they have done well trying to clean the harbor up, it's a big difference there since I was a kid.
