Soldering Station Recommendations?

Kevin, I am in Dublin. If you are ever in the area you are more than welcome to handle the Hakko in person before buying something.

Stuart, it will be a pleasure to meet another local AK'er. In regard to the SS, I'll just pick one and live with it.

I will add another vote for the Hakko. I have the 936(predisesor to the 888) and it is fantastic. I spent a day using my bosses weller (nice one, about 25 years old too!) And I still brought in my Hakko the next few days to finish the boards I was building. It really is a fantastic iron.

Dave got back to me. The offer on the Hakko is extended until December 31st. I bought one. I'll see what all the hub bub is about!

You won't be sorry.

If Hakko isn't the best, it is certainly way up there. It's cheaper than some and more expensive than some others, but probably represents the best value in high quality soldering equipment.

Don't let the bright blue and yellow color fool you.

Yeah, looking forward to having the new iron for the Pioneer PL-530 recap I'm undertaking. It will be my first board soldering experience.

We're just gratuitously piling on now, but I'll also vouch for the Hakko 888. I had the Ayoue knockoff of the 936 before this and the quality of the Hakko is an order of magnitude better. I have great confidence that you will be quite happy with your new soldering station. And with the price that B+D is selling them for, it would be more expensive to steal it!

Speaking of de-soldering irons. I'm cheap and always looking for an edge... I plan to built one of these myself and modify a bulb type sucker. No electricity!

Home made modification of his original equipment and works better.. only thing missing in the above design is a solder trap but that would easy to figure out. A dual foot pedal bicycle pump would an easy substitute for his plan, too.

I'll admit....I had some problems at first but the radioshack desolder iron worked like a champ once I got used to it. Be careful with the tip though(keep it tinned and cleaned unless you wanna buy another one).

I currently have both of the above... They both solder well, but the 888 heats to operating temp much faster.
