Solen caps in NHT SuperZero make trumpet sound harsh and ear-hurting

Tony Gee has a lengthy introduction, perhaps you missed it?
I read it-and ackknowleged that he starts out saying the results are subjective. Which means at the very least it's a rough guide.
To me it seems the cap mixing recommendations are a stretch at best-he doesn't appear to have tested any cap mixing etc-I may have missed that though.

I've tried Dayton 5% caps, ClarityCap CSA's and ESA's, Mundorf EVO OIl's, Supremes, and Supreme Silver/Oils. Tony's descriptions of these various caps, matched with exactly what I've heard. I've found Tony Gee's reviews spot on. In fact, I think Tony may have been too nice with his reviews, because some of his comments weren't strong enough, to the negative. I think he pulled a Julian Hirsch, so as to not ruffle feathers.

Oh, next up, Audyn Q4's. Then I think I need to try F1Nut's Obbligato capacitors. That should be fun too.

Sure, that's good to know.
That's great your having fun experimenting with caps.
Not sure about the ruffling feathers, what that's supposed to mean?
Cap manufactures? Speaker manufactures?
But as mentioned, it seems hard to have a spot on cap review for every speaker, driver, crossover combination, and to be accurate for all those combinations, the evidence.
From what I have seen, with my small sample set, doesn't seem to support that. The review on the Erse PulseX in my AMT3's was so far off to make little sense to me. While the Great Heil is unique, it seems to me this would open the possibility these subjective reviews might be better served taking those differences into account.
Not to mention, bring back the case of Benic/Daytons-many people here, and lots of other forums use them, with seemingly great success.
That's seems very contradicting to Gee's assessment.
Why is that?
Ears only? Crossovers, drivers, driving systems?
Just a thought, when someone is describing the various cap type/manufactures, and how well they worked for you, and perhaps describe the speaker models, driver types, etc that you had success with.
Instead on the broad brush 'spot on' descriptions, as it appears those aren't the case, in some instances, at the very least.

Why is that?

A few reasons.

One, they are cheap.
Two, inexperienced users....first timers.
Three, they will sound "better" than 30 year old worn out electrolytics.
Four, they are cheap.

That's why IMHO the speaker refurb rebuilds @ Ak are more helpful, on a case by cases basis, because your are eliminated some huge variables.
You still have different ears/driving equipment and listening rooms, but the guy at least has, in most cases the same transducers, and crossovers.

Perhaps, but that seems to make some huge assumptions.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion, I certainly don't have a problem with that.
But that's hard to apply to every example, to say the least.
At least in my experience, I have been around AMT3's, Heils etc since the 70's, for what ever that's worth.
Again, I'm looking at a small sample set of speakers, and caps.
But given that, I have to wonder if that doesn't apply more on a broader range, given all the possible variables?

Not really. They are without question the main reasons judged by my many years of reading audio forums with cheap being the main reason.

Really?
Hmmmm...
Again, your entitled to your opinion, I have to disagree it's that simple, in my experience. But if that works for you, I think that's awesome!
But speaking of ruffled feathers, not my intention to do that here.
I'll get my own thread started, and try to get some other opinions as well.
I appreciate your opinions and input!!

FIY
Myself using the Daytons had nothing what so ever with being cheap. I had some major discussions with AMT3/Heils experts years ago-and they recommended the Daytons due to their uncolored nature-they didn't add anything, or subtract anything.
I was looking at using much more expensive caps-because I figured they had to be "better" at the time.
It was the right choice-I took at stab on the Erse, because I wanted to have a alternative for other AMT3 users.
As mentioned, the Heil is unique, but their are also a number of drivers that deviate from typical cone/dome types.
I think it would be safe to say there are some difference there too-but I can't be certain-with my small sample set.
A spent way more experimenting with woofer types-even if I spent 1k on caps alone it would not have been a big deal.
In my case, money is relative-I make a great living being self employed the last 30 years or so.
But I certainly know money doesn't always guarantee good sound. Synergy almost always does.
And from this, and my small sample set, clear, but distinct deviation, I have to think there is a decent possibility this also applies to capacitors in speaker crossovers.
That maybe looking at synergy, instead of cost/construction might be more useful.

We could go back and forth all night, but I have no interest in that, so this will be my last comment. I would seriously question the judgement of anyone that states Dayton or any cap for that matter has an uncolored nature. Everything in this hobby has a color.

Ok, again your opinion, with a thinly veiled insult
Thanks, much appreciated....that adds a lot to the topic.
I meant to say neutral, sorry for the mixup.
I could say they same about your opinions as well-but it's not clearly worth it!!

Part of the problem is, in my opinion it’s hard to have a discussion when people mistake their opinions for facts, I agree it’s pointless.
It ends in insults.
After a re-read I don’t think you meant that directly towards me, specifically but it’s getting to a point where it stalls out
Sorry for the confusion
I’ll start my own thread, focusing on AMT threes that’ll be a lot more helpful, hopefully it’ll be a more open minded forum!!
I’ve been around speakers Heils Audio along time.
I know where I came from and where I’m going... i’m looking for something more solid than merely opinions that don’t vary despite possible evidence to the contrary
Been there, done that
All the best..thanks for the nice info!

Let us know what capacitors you use/test on your AMT tweeters. Try out a Audyn -Cap plus. It sounds very airy even compared to the Mundorf EVO aluminum in oil. I have both these caps being used in two different pair of Optimus 7 speakers. Here is the tweeter used in the Optimus 7.. It's the black one. Yellow one is a substitute. These are "Cheaper tweeters" but sound very nice. I've used the Dayton caps on a number of vintage Pioneer and Radio Shack speakers and even on these Mid-Fi speakers, they don't sound as airy/slow decay of cymbals than the Audyn Cap plus or the EVO caps.. I don't have a graph/chart but my ears didn't need much time to tell a immediate difference in sound. Daytons PMPC caps are fine caps, but I prefer the Audyns and Mundorfs. I think you will, too.:)Tweeters.png

Thanks-will do much appreciated, as well as the thoughtful insight and info. I bet they sound nice-like the Alnico motors!! Peerless?

KRESHNA here we have it ,leave those solens as is , install a 4ohm 10watt resistor after the coil after the 8.2 cap straight to ground , Presto all harshness gone , guaranteed. Try a 6ohm and 8ohm depending on how flat u want sound
