i have a sony 1130 integrated solid state amp that a freind gave me and was trying to find some info on it like the power rating and if its 4 ohm stable per channel
thanks that showed me everything i need.only thing i noticed it listed it as a 2 channel and mine has 4 channels. im building some cabinets and with a 4 ohm mid and tweet combo .looking for a sub now
so if im running 4 ohm speakers off the off each side wiring a 4 ohm sub to each side on the other outputs the amp would see 2 ohms on each side right? is there a chance i can still use the 4 ohms i already have and use a couple 8 ohm subs or will 3 ohms per side fry it
Most of these early ss amps do not like to see 4 ohms and will start heating up. This became apparent when the FTC regs came out and manufacturers had to republish specs and as a consequence many new models were intorduced thereafter. I suspect that @ 2ohms the amp would really be unstable since most amps are and no better @ 3 ohms. I am not sure on the amp whether switching both sets of speakers on parrellels the outputs (the most common) and your #s are correct or if it puts them in series (some apparently did) and then the ohms would be additive. If in series if you have 1 set of speakers only, they should turn off if you swtich to the both position. My Sony receiver from the same period does not put them in series and the amp section does not particularly do well into 4 ohms when comparing my original Advents to The Smaller Advents. I'd suggest moving up to a set of 8 ohm FR speakers. Really good sets can be had for reasonable sums and get you away from the whole issue. The amp is supposed to be very good and if it is close to my receiver, is a keeper.
ok thanks for the help. i already have cabinets and was kinda wanting to try the diy route .ill try to find a good set of 8ohm speakers or maybe a powered sub
