I remember reading that someone here was interested in some Sony APM series speakers.

Well here's your chance for a great price.

That's an 8" passive radiator, and a 4" midbass. These are not the great APM, but rather later copies built without of the quality of the earlier series...

aha thanks for the correction. So only a 4 inch driver? They look rather large for something rather unimpressive in specs, and probably sound too.

There are a couple of APM's for sale locally in a pawn shop for $125. Are there certain models that would be worth this or that I should be looking for? What is the overall sound like? I only have 2 extra pairs of speakers now and I should be adding more.

Have a pair of APMs not with me here, but still down in ny, my sons using them. Had them sinceprobly 90, had bought a used sony boutique system for cheap (the woman had paid out 1800) and these were a part of the package. Now Im sure these may not be the desirable models, though the woofer is really a woofer and not a passive, I recall rating sticker says 100 watts rms (of course I could say Im 8 feet tall). Strange thing, no lpad(s). Other than that, they always worked fine sounded..good I guess. They are clear sounding, clear as a bell, but muted clear. Not ringy or boomy at all. Just struck me as very reserved, maybe a little bass light. I always had the impression that they were a little hard to push, you could get the volume out of them, but you had to crank the receiver higher than what you would have expected to. But, thats just my impression.

No -- that's actually a woofer, not a passive. Those APMs were part of a Sony system that doesn't sound bad at all , but its not comparable to the real APMs. Cheap thin cabinet, a simple cone tweeter behind the 'acoustic lens', and the hexagonal cell flat panel is attached to a cone driven by one voice coil, rather than being driven directly by four voice coils like the better APMs. None the less, an interesting experience in the lack of cone resonance. And the drivers themselves are carefully made -- the woofers have little brass weights to tune them, and the closed back mids are either with a little hole drilled with felt over it, or not, depending on whether the Q needed adjustment (that's my guess as to the reason).

That's a way higher quality speaker than the one listed. Stamped driver baskets, single voice coils, and wood veneer, etc.

I know, I was just posting it because those were the most common "better" units.
