SONY STR-6046 repair..

Hi

I got my 5th receiver in .... It is a nice little SONY STR 6046
Goal is to restore it to be functional and keep it in my personal collection.

Upon first check The Amp does run fine, but the reciver part (AM a FM) is not functioning.
Also AUX and Phono only give one channel..

On further inspection it turned out the selector switch was brutaly ripped out of this Sony
The selector switch entertains two separate switch units each switch contains as far as I can see 4 switches

Found the manual and even the part number.. Seems to be a very complicated executed input switching circuit SONY came up with using the PHONO stage and changing feedback and preset EQ settings for the inputs..

The defected/mutilated switch is an ALPS slide switch with a rotating action drive shaft.
It look like this

But the STR-6046switch Has two of these with one rotator shaft..

I tried to find the switches on EBAY and guess what... I found them..... or so I thought...
My Sony needs a 5 position switch and I found a 4 position and ^position switch on EBAY.

So my question: Before I start hacking and tearing out the old switch an construct some kind Of my own version I would like to stay stock and replace the mutilated switch with a Original

SO ANY BODY here on AK ...please help me to save this Very nice SONY STR-6046 and offer me a Good working ALPS 5 position Rotation driven slide switch or please point me in the direction to any one who has these still in stock...

Note: I still have to investigate the offered switch on ebay... I might be able to to "hack" that one into my 6046.. But mean time please assist!

I guess there aren't a lot of STR-6046 spare parts stashes out there. You might want to try posting a WTB in Barter Town - Parts section (membership required). Also, is the same switch used in the 6036? You might be able to find a spare parts 6036 unit easier.

Hee hoo Just wanted you all to Know That I found the selector switch In the USA via Ebay. It Is confirmed I bought it SO One of these days It will land om my door mat.
I did cost me half of the cost of what the SONY cost me. so really no good economical deal but so glad I found the real thing... This one will probably not leave my repair studio soon.

Totally over the moon That I will be able to restore this little Sony to It's original glory.

Hi guys...

Got the "new" second hand selector switch in today from Joe Old Audio from New York.. Could not wait to get it in...The Sony STR 6046 was ready to go... the old switch was already out...

It took some extra "take apart" but it went i as if I knew what I was doing

No really It is not to hard, just a bit fiddly.. After the first visual check (since I took of a bunch of wires) It was time to test it...
FM Mode... Power connected... headphone connected... my hand as antenna..... Power on..... YES YES YES... It works again.. both channels...
Big relieve... Tomorrow the real testing starts.

So happy...

Congratulations! Fantastic that the switch seems to have fixed it, and nothing more is wrong.

there aren't a lot of STR-6046 spare parts stashes out there. The same switch used in the 6036?

Yes @jwhvt You where fully on he money... The Switch I found and bought on ebay was the selector switch from a STR 6036.

Again thanks for the tip. I would not been able to find this switch without your model number tip.


Today I have re-instated the Light bulb wiring, replaced the scale and Signal strength lights for warm White LED versions.. Gonna do a partial recap of the supply and MPX section. I noticed that the Stereo decoder has a bit of trouble kicking in..Usually this is related to out of spec caps.. And I have seen some heat damage near the power supply transistor...

I'll check back later !

Hi vintage av got a 6046 and no radio everything else works am thinking it's the switch did the FM and AM lights come on when you select them before you fixed it
