Sound, the Way the Brain Prefers to Hear It

At the 2003 ASA meeting I saw Ron Freiheit of Wenger give a paper on a "virtual" practice space they'd designed using active acoustics. The walls are very dead and there are microphones and speakers around the perimeter. A processor handles automatic gain control and delay/reverb calculations and plays back over the speakers what the microphones hear in a way that makes the room seem much, much larger. I guess there are a few of these throughout the country and I'd love to visit one sometime.

The imponderables....psychoacoustics has shown engineers that they still have a long way to go.........the technology is really being strained.

So I am often amused when I read some fulminating, and pronouncing on this very complex and subjective audio.
