Anyone know what this speaker is? Dimensions are 24 inches high x 14 inches wide, wood veneer on solid wood.

Don't know but sure is different from what I'm use to seeing with that oval cutout for the drivers. Looks solid as all heck. Someone will opine, I'm sure with more knowledge than me (that won't be hard to do.)

any pictures of the back of the driver ? there's probably a manufacturer's code stamp on it, which will tell you EXACTLY who made it

Short answer: I don't know.
Longer answer part 1: If that elliptical opening in the baffle contains an elliptical driver, they could be an EMI speaker.
Longer answer part 2: If the driver is conventional (round) with an elliptical cutout surrounding it, it could be a Lafayette "Elliptoflex" enclosure.

I guarantee that at least one of the three answers given above is correct! :-)

mhardy is right, as if there could be doubt:D I have a pair http://audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=46556&d=1176401103 bottom speaker.

Yes they are heavy and look pretty. They were easier to get into that I thought.

I just tore my down this weekend, it has the SK-58 drivers. I learned something. The surrounds on the driver is sheep skin. It was old and dry, I used some leather restorer product on it. The kind that is sold in Tack shops for fixing up old saddles.

The dang thing sounds way better and play's loud, ElectroVoice Sentry/HPM 100 loud. I like mine.

I looked up the patent on the cabs

Here are some pics of the SK-58. Do these look like yours? Not oval though.

That's them, the first baffle on the enclosure is the only thing that's oval. The cabs are an interesting design. My wife had the camera when I took mine apart so I didn't get any pics. The patent app indicates that the ports are tuned to phase not resonance.

All in all, very cool speakers, no claims made to the last word in HiFi, but I am enjoying them.

This is the stuff I used on the surrounds http://www.shanestack.com/shop/inde...9&ps_session=945402639f7782dc5012b2f125326c57

I was careful not to loosen the surrounds, but boy they needed it.

I looked at that patent. oddly it was filed todays date , May 14, 1963....cool huh.

That is cool, I hadn't noticed, I've got my speaks running ABC2 real loud to celebrate.

Sadly, it's a sportscast, the AFL's Brisbane reserve bomber has to play cuz the started was busted for drugs. I bet the Vikings could beat them.

Wollongong will see partly cloudy and a high of 21.

Oh, back to music. Sound track to passage to India is what I think he said.

If the drivers are there and are (all) working -- assuming they're the coaxes -- I'd say "heck yeah". Unless you really don't need them (which would never stop me, but YMMV). They should be very efficient (sensitive) and would likely be a fine match for a low-powered, single ended tube amplifier. You say you don't have one? Hmm, sounds like a perfect excuse. Again, YMMV.

:-)

Nope, really don't need them, have too many already but that hasn't stopped me either. Don't have a tube amp either, but I do have several low wattage SS amps and receivers. Won't hurt to look though. What is YMMV?

I'm staring hard at the pic I posted and swear I can see 2 dust caps, one below the other. Could be the lighting tho.

"Your mileage may vary" (i.e., you may not agree with my assessment) :-)

Two dust caps is perfectly possible -- some of the Lafayette "coaxes" were three-ways with offset drivers (not unlike the 1970's Jensen "Triaxial" car speakers... there is nothing new under the sun)

I'm confused, there is something of a dust cap, but that gray thing in the middle is the tweeter. Or am I misunderstanding you. The driver looks the way it should.

mhardy, I've been tyhinking of a tube amp for mine. But then I'd have to pull them off internet radio duty and I'd need more speakers to give that R-1050 to push.

This never ends does it.
