I'm new to this and probably going about things backasswards, but I recently acquired a Technics SL-D2 TT and a Pioneer SX-850 receiver, need speakers, any suggestions

DCM Time Frames and Time windows sound like high end audiophile speakers that would cost over a thousand today and you can often pick them up minty for about 150 dollars. They are smooth, refined, and efficient so they could be driven to decent volume by your equipment and cast a wide sound stage. They are tall and thin.

The original large and "smaller" Advents reproduce the timbre of music very accurately and have deep tight bass, these often show for about 100, but watch out for rotted foam surrounds on the woofers, these are actually easily redone for another 28.00 or so. These are big "bookshelf" speakers.

Dynaco A-25s are supposed to be great as well, as well as JBL century 100s, and Polk B-10s but I have never heard these speakers.

Find some large Advents for $10 at a thrift store or yard sale and "fix" them.... :thmbsp:

Cambridge SoundWorks model 6 speakers.
$99 with free shipping, from the Cambridge SoundWorks web-site.
They sound waaaay better, than $99!!

I don't know where you are located. Check the audiogon, craiglist, & ebay listings. As an example, here's a used JBL 4312 listing that would fit within your needs & price range. You should be able to find something similar in your area, given a little time & patience.

BTW, there's not one right way to 'go about this'. Just keep plugging away, until you find what you're looking for.

Hum, with all those limitations there are only about a million speakers that would work. lol. Finding something that you can fix up is a great suggestion. I enjoy speakers more when I've restored them. But, just random favorites that should be in your range:

ADS L810 or L710 (if you find a reasonable deal- not sure what they're going for these days.)
DCM Time Windows
Dynaco A25
Any classic EPI/Genesis with the 8" woofer and the inverted dome tweeter. Bigger the better. The ones with the 10" passive are amazing.
My daily drivers are B&W 602s. You could probably get a good pair in your price range, but I think they need a sub to be great.
Boston "A" series - A150s are great.

There are a million others.

Take care,

Ed
