Distortion is caused by two simple factors--either the amplifier is being driven beyond its capabilities, or the speaker is being driven beyond its capabilities--that's it--pretty basic. Sure, there are lots of different factors involved on both sides of the equation, but those are the two basic causes of distortion.
There's plenty of distortion being cause by your amp, and speakers at less than a watt.

Any device in the audio chain that alters the waveform between input and output is a cause of distortion, speakers are the biggest offenders with some adding up to 10% to the equation. If you want to except tone amplifiers, loudness contours and EQ as distortion i can agree with that. But, pretty much every piece of equipment you have between your source media and your ears is contributing some degree of distortion. The good stuff keeps it to the most practical minimum.
 
The OP had only one post ever, before his 2nd question/post here yesterday. Do you think we served him properly? After he's read all these posts and the crap back and forth, is he better off than he was before? Did we educate him or show him what many already think, that this site is full of audio elitis....Will he come back again? Sometimes we are really full of ourselves.

I totally agree, and that is what I meant with my caveat of "there are a lot of factors on both sides of the equation"--but, in general, it is overdriving one side or the other that causes the most severe distortion and eventually leads to damage on one side or the other (or in some cases both).
 
Your understanding is incorrect. There are far more speakers damaged from people turning the volume up too far on their low or medium powered amp, AVR or receiver causing clipped signals to be sent to the speakers. Take your gear for example. You are far more likely to damage your speakers with your receiver than you would be with a 600 wpc amp. It's extremely rare to have speaker damage from a high powered amp.

The problem comes in that one has to wade through some falsehoods. Which is something over which we have little to no control. This, unfortunately, exists on every public forum. The 'experts' posting what they are quite sure are facts.
 
One of the biggest sources of confusion that I see related to the OP's question and others who ask similar questions is not so much the misleading concept of speaker wattage (though I agree that is BS), but the idea that speakers are more safe with a less powerful receiver/amp. It is somewhat intuitive to assume that when you see a 100watt amp for example, that 100watts represents it's maximum output. Unfortunately that is false. A 100watt amp can put out much more than 100watts. The 100watt measurement represents how much relatively undistorted output that it manage. It can put out more, but with increasingly high levels of distortion and eventually clipping (normal "round" waves becoming square waves when the rounded ends get "clipped" off due to lack of sufficient power). So if you were comparing a 100watt amp vs a 200watt amp, chances are that both would be able to put out 200watts, but only one would be doing it within it's intended limits. It's pretty clear which would be more safe at that point.

The first two posts are the OPs, the third and forth say use your ears.

If I hear distortion in the
80-90 Db range something is not right.
It's really as simple as the others have mentioned, the sound should be pleasing and rewarding and let your wonderful ears tell you.

I have learned the hard way over the years blowing tweeters by trying to get too much out of too little.

What might seem like back and forth bickering is actually a great strength of a forum like this. The world is filled with those with huge egos who expect their advice to be taken as gospel without any fact checking. They love one-way forms of communication like making Youtube videos because no one can call them out as wrong. At least on a message board, wrong answers tend to be called out. It might seem like pointless back and forth argument, but that is what it takes to filter out the bad information. I don't see how that makes any of us "full of ourselves".

Because what you say makes no sense. If what you say is true my system would have broken down years ago. Then the amount of noise in a signal path has everything to do with how effectively speakers operate. Just because a group of people think something to be true doesn't mean that they are informed correctly. Just like thinking that a 600 watt amp won't blow out a pair of 400 watt speakers, a person would be changing out fuses like crazy. How do I know this, cause I have an MX-1000 so I know very well that you have no credibility. Your comment about an 100 watt amp receiver tells me you uses a low watt high distortion type A amp/receiver probably produced in the seventies and you all have the same aptitude about distortion. My receiver puts out 168 watts per channel and the sound has been compared to the Luxman R-117......your not even in the same league I am in. You don't have the understanding of all types of equipment and hold on to concepts of what people were putting in stereo magazines decades ago. You probably think that distortion makes your speakers sound better cause you have a type A amp. There is a reason why people don't refer to technical specifications and it's because they don't see the relationship in how signal to noise ratio is used to match up equipment of the same S/N ratio. You seem to be one of the monkey see....monkey do people on this site.

Your really asking on how noise effects speaker operation ? Then you must not understand the relationship between the amp and the crossover in a speaker....or how sensitive speakers require less signal to operate.

You do realize that regardless of the maximum output power of an amplifier, you still have full control over the output (typically via the volume knob), right? Just like how, even in a fast car, you still have full control over your speed. So yeah, if you have a 600 watt amp and you can't help yourself from maxing the volume control for no reason, changing fuses would be the least of your worry... But thankfully that's not how people do things in the real world. My bridged Yamaha P2200/P2201 amps are good for ~700watts per channel @8ohms. The speakers I have them hooked to are rated for 300-400watts. Somehow I have managed to not harm any of them. Guess I'm just lucky?

Speaker sensitivity....

The less sensitive, the more signal a speaker can handle without blowing ! The more sensitive a speaker the less signal it takes for a speaker to reproduce sound. The sensitivity of your speakers must be lower than 88db.

That's elementary...
