Speakers with questionable "upgrades"... post your findings here.

These are by far, the best looking and best sounding speaker mods ever.

They should have pooled the money spent buying eight small horn tweeters, and just bought ONE bigger horn/waveguide with driver, to fit in the space that's completely unused in the top bay of the cabinet.

Of course, some other woofer than those JL subwoofers, would also help a lot. Something with a lightweight paper or similar cone, anyone?

It could have wound up the "poor man's Altec 19"- but alas, just no...

Regards,
Gordon.

Man, if they had only used one EMIT and put it inline with the midrange (vertical line), that could have been a pretty high-performance thing.

Regards,
Gordon.

They could have used one Emit, offset to the inside edge of each cabinet. That would have made more sense that 2 separate tweeters, mounted in a horizontal line, app. 8" apart?

I don't think that that EPI disaster can be blamed on puzzlecoat. I experimented with similar damping compounds, and it is perfectly possible to apply it so that it looks like it came from the factory. Whether the damping is a good idea is a different question, but even bad ideas can be implemented well, and equally, good ideas done incompetently.

Well at least the previous owner tried hiding this upgrade. Looks normal on the front. Then on the back we got a Polk tweeter glued to original vifa diaphragm. No wonder why they sounded overly muffled and veiled. A tweeter playing through a tweeter. Gotta give em an E for effort.

What were they? ARs? I've seen those clear poly woofers in the Parts Express catalog years ago.

Picked up pair of really nice AR2a's in Dayton a couple of years ago and the guy gave them to me. He wanted them gone and I thought I could harvest some veneer from them.

My Marantz Imperial 5G high school upgrades. Bought RS woofers, sock stuffed and sealed the port. Then my sister used them and a cat tore the surround, so white rtv filled the hole. Eventually I’ll frankenspeaker them all the way.

So, 1/3 no surround, 1/3 rotten surround, 1/3 woofer permanently glued to basket? Got it. Should sound at least 3/3 excellent! :bigok:
