Speakers with questionable "upgrades"... post your findings here.

I have a pair of AR-14's with Radio Shack woofers. They actually sound fine, but perhaps not as good as original. They live at work in the shop and I paid 5 bucks for them.

How about a thread showing speakers with questionable "upgrades"? They can be either from eBay, Craigslist, or pictures you've taken in your travels. No links to the web sites mentioned, just save the pictures and post 'em here. Let's see if we can make a hall of shame.

Here is a pair of Mission speakers, upgraded with an additional Realistic tweeter and a JBL woofer, which itself looks like it's been upgraded with several coats of truck bed liner. Since the Realistic tweeter is now in the hole where the reflex port was, the "port" has been moved to the back, courtesy of a hole saw.

How about these pair of Advents? We all know that Advent tweeters aren't capable of reducing the full frequency range, so the owner added an additional piezo tweeter.

Gong on from the above, Technics speakers must be even less able to reproduce the high frequencies, so this pair has TWO extra piezo tweeters installed.

These “beauties” (currently on eBay) are supposed to be “upgraded” L212s. To me, they look like something left out too long in the sun.

Those look like they might be a tad bright?

I wonder what they were? A Marantz tweeter and what looks like a Radio Shack 15" woofer. I remember looking at the specs of those woofers back in the day, they needed some huge enclosure volume.

Lol, if you could see some of the garbage I cobbled together when I was a kid! Some of it worked, lots didn't, but I learned a lot. My dad gave me a jigsaw, and let me use the table saw. There was lots of new construction in our subdivision, and they threw away a lot of osb. I built a bunch of osb monstrosities that got burned when I was done experimenting. I did get very good at cutting circles with a jigsaw though.

Those are "cobble jobs". I have upgraded speakers that I didn't particularly care for but that meant replacing eveything besides the cabinet and doing a professional job. I have gotten great results but that is because I gave a crap and did the job right. I don't like doing a half-ass job. Some do.

Here is another example of the duck tape surround modification. I picked up these Realistic Optimus 1000 speakers for free. Both the mids and woofers are modified.

Another modification was to replace the original tweeters that went to 20 kHz with bullet horns that only go to 16 kHz. Fortunately, the cones survived the duck tape removal.

You should send a copy of that pic to

I bet they would laugh their butts off :D

Wait...what? Do those have a woofer in the usual place in the horn, or...

I'm only asking because I want to know why I'm about to open a vein looking at these. :p

My JBL L300 as I got them:

They actually still sounded very good, but obviously they were better with proper woofers and lenses.

Yikes! Two ports instead of one? Or is there a closed space behind where the midrange(?) with the lenses sat?

Hard to believe someone spent the time required to do such a nice execution. Well, it wasn't an execution, more of a living death. :dunno:
