Definitely looks like an 18".
I'm still trying to figure out what's trying to be accomplished with this setup.

4 - Original 1975 Advent large floor speakers!
You gotta be old to appreciate these, original ,*74/*75 large Walnut Advent floor speakers by Henry Kloss. Brown University EE major and audiophile, changed speaker configuration to get rid of the traditional Advent "skeechy" high end. they work fine and could be retrofitted to original status by industrious person with TLC to spare. Cabinets are Walnut and have rounded corners and in good shape considering their age. One rounded speaker grill plate missing, lost, who knows?

At an average of $500 a pair for nice ones in my market it’s a shame.
Not a bad idea, one I've read about before with Altec 825 combination horn-bass reflex cabinets: use the 416 or 515 woofer horn loaded only and use the lower box volume, over 7 cubic feet, instead for another woofer that goes deeper than the 416 or 515. The trade off is the added woofer will lack the sensitivity of the 15" Altec but Hell, 825 cabinets have a stepped response below the horn cut off anyway. Using an active crossover between the two woofers will allow balancing, I'd try crossing somewhere between 100 and 150hz.
Yeah, this appears to be a serious and well thought out thing: a single box that gives the Glorious Technicolor midrange of the horn loaded Altec 416 and 515 while giving significantly deeper and possibly more powerful bass. A VOT with a built in sub so to speak. Very sensible for home use.

Ahh Google images is my friend and I was able to back into this information. Seems like the "jury" has mixed feelings about the results.

Here is a pair of 1970s "The Fisher" 105s I picked up in a thrift store. All the speakers had been replaced, which I get, but the replacement mid ranges were too small for the openings so a cardboard ring was cut out and used as an adapter:
I replaced the mids with a pair that fit properly. I also replaced the tweeters:
I had some help from this forum on a minor mod to the crossovers. I'm very happy with the end result.

Advent seems to be the most hacked up in the unoffical poll, followed by Infinity.
Now, years ago, I came across a pair of Advents that had the tweeter holes cut to put some different ones in. I tried selling the cabinets, but could not find anyone that wanted them. I came across some aluminium coned woofers on the Parts Express forum, and together with some ali mids and silkie tweeters, built an all-Dayton driver "Advent". Someone on the PE forum was nice enough to model some crossovers for me, so it was more thought out than some of the monstrosities on this page. Hopefully that gives me a free pass...

That's making lemonade out of lemons, doesn't qualify as an "upgrade" for this thread! It's actually therapeutic after reading the last few posts, like eye bleach.
