"SPRING" Thrift Store Finds....

Decided to hit the Goodwill on the way into work this afternoon. Picked up a pair of Sansui SP-1500's for $29.99. The surrounds look good. I'll find out this weekend if the tweeters are working. :)

Spent my Saturday morning scouring the local shops. Found a pair of those cheapie fiberboard stands (black), perfect for my AR-4x, $5. Then found a pair of "The Advent" original loudspeakers for $20. Unfortunately, the Advents need fresh caps. Old ones aren't passing anything to the tweeters.
 
Tannoy PBM 5 IIs 15 at a pawn shop with one tweeter out. I have a tweeter from a B & W 303 doing substitution duty. All I can say is wow for an unassuming looking bookshelf, best small (1 foot tall) bookshelf speakers I have heard except for maybe the Linn Tukans I had, can't wait to order the correct Vifa tweeter so they will be perfectly matched. Now I don't feel as bad about getting rid of the Tukans. :) Amazing detail you can see why these are used as actual studio monitors. I seem to have a knack for finding studio monitors cheap I found a pair of NS-10s missing woofers for 20 dollars at another pawn shop and gave them a friend who mixes sound in Chicago.

Pickings are slim here, too. While running errands and waiting for the Craigs List ad for Infinity 5000 speakers to call, I wandered into a different GW store.

What should my eyes see but an Infinity Quantum Qe.... ONE!!! :tears::tears: As it was only $7.99, I bought it, hoping against hope that the Emit was OK (woofer foam looked great!)

Hooked it up alongside my Smaller Advents and fired it up....:music: Sweet sound poured forth...great highs :banana: The SA seemed a tad better in the bass, but no contest in the highs...even to these old tin ears.

Hopefully, the 5000's didn't sell in his yard sale, and I'll have them, too. :thmbsp:

Looks like digging out the old turntable was a good idea.

Oops! I just realized this thread is in the speaker forum. These will sound great on my KLH Research 10's, a score from fifteen years ago. Threre was a pair of Panasonic speakers for $12 at the thrift, I passed.

I saw those today. APM-717 with rotten surrounds for $70. I have a hard enough time finding round surrounds that don't amount to $7 of parts + $5 service fee (cause order is less than $20) + $12 shipping!

They also had a pair of KEF C-35's (I think) without grills for $99 (yikes!).

(this is in Victoria, BC, in case anyone is wondering)
 
Paradigm Micros

Today I found what I first thought was a pair of Paradigm Atoms - but the dimensions are wrong from what I can find on the net - I am 99% sure these are Performance Series Micros. The enclosures are 8.5"H x 7.5"D x 6"W. Tweeter is labelled 100007H and date code (I think) 94-06. Mid-woofer is labelled B102WFMICROW5S and is 4.5". In decent condition (one larger corner ding). Haven't connected them up yet but the drivers all check out with the multimeter.

Here are some pics - the larger Paradigms are my $10 3SEMini's.

So the "Micros" were priced at $10. But the thrift shop has a 50% off speaker sale. Yup...$5 + tax (oh and that's Canadian $, so $4.25 US).

I needed new rear surrounds ... I'm happy.:D

Surrounds weren't in pieces when they first got there. Which is a pity.

There was a set of these at the local SA a few months ago at a similar price but I passed. Too big and I figured someone else would like them more. I did not pull the grilles off and might have bought them if I did however.

IMO the Sansuis to pick up are the AS series. They are a non-ported/acoustic suspension design but with cone tweeters. While the "Mediterranean" styling is not to my taste, they are very well made and heavy.

I pony expressed a set to Bryana a couple years ago and they sounded much better than I expected. Very big and rich sound that would fill an old school rumpus room (tile floor, pine paneling and mandatory damp basement smell) with lots-o-sound.

I picked up a pair of Dynaudio Audience 42w speakers from the one I work at for next to nothing. One of our frequent customers donated his entire Dynaudio setup, 42, 42w, and 42c when he upgraded. The speakers were gently used, and came with all the original packaging and documentation. I priced them at about half of what they've been going for on ebay, thinking they'd move fast and they sat in the store for more than two months.

Eventually, I couldn't stand moving them around every week and asked my boss if I could buy them. She gave me a great deal and I couldn't be more pleased. They're awesome speakers for a small room, and great for listening to music by artists like Four Tet, M83 and Prefuse 73.

Now my only problem is finding a nice amp to pair them with.
 
I just picked up an MK V75 mkII subwoofer for $5 at a garage sale...

Just plugged it in. It works perfectly. I didn't know if it was a particularly good sub but I know M&K is one of the better brands so I thought I'd take a chance. I read the reviews. Holy cow!

After listening, I can say they were right. :)

Found a set of Electro-voice EV-11s for $4.88 - they're a little beat up but they sound rather nice. Nothing spectacular but good kitchen speakers nonetheless.
